View Full Version : Woes of a gamer
It's that time of year again... and if you are a true gamer you know what I mean. It's that time of year when nothing but crap titles are released... all the major game producers are gearing up for their Nov/Dec releases (Best time to make money on a game.. fa la la la la)
So in the meantime we are stuck with a few games with a lifespan of a bottle of vodka at an AA meeting.
I find myself spending a few hours of week searching for those decently good games that I might have missed... downloading demos... and going back through old titles.
What's everyone playing right now?

I've played just about every MMO game out there Gibs.
Been through Lineage twice now.
Played it when it first came out got to level 32 *stopped*
Just recently (2-3weeks ago) I played a free-downloaded version of it that has xp/money/skillpoints all X30 so that you level incredibly fast and get to see the end game. That was fun... but the server was crap.
I need a break from MMO's and I'm a bit worn out of FPS genre right now.
My friends and I wiped the dust off Tony Hawk: Underground last night. Forgot how much fun that can be...
*friend challenges me to Tony Hawk Trick Attack*
*friend struggles to get 25,000 points in one minute*
*I bust out a 400,000 pt. manual trick*
...oh.
:D

Umm.. do a search for "Lineage 2 extreme free"
You'll find a site with like 100 different free lineage 2 servers.
...finding one that works well may take time.
I have GTA Andreas... but I'm bored with it.
I think it's a good game.... not great.
They need to make it multiplayer, or multiplayer-online.
Start everyone with a section of the city, and let them have turf wars.
Score points for killing, destroying, taking turf etc... which unlocks more weapons in each persons zone. Now that would kill.
thin ice 08-11-2005, 12:25 PM I'm playin' GTA:SA too and it's pretty cool. But in these harsh times what has kept me going was Fable. I must've beat that game 5 times by now but there's somthing new every time. It's a great game. :nice:

I thought about trying Fable... it seemed like a pretty cool idea.
I heard that the game is way to short though.
...and my x-box is kinda on the fritz.
Gibson 08-11-2005, 12:52 PM Fable's a great game. You can go light or dark side kinda like KOTOR. It's got pretty sweet graphics though :):):nice:
Monster 08-17-2005, 02:43 AM F.E.A.R. hits shelves in October.
Anybody who likes FPS games, I STRONGLY suggest you buy this game. It's absolutely worth it.
Trust me.
As for my gaming, I spend 8 hours a day on the theoretically-slated-for-an-October-release expansion pack for Empire Earth II. After that, my brain is kinda cooked.
I bought WoW though, so I expect to have my soul and my social life sucked into that.
ToeJam 08-17-2005, 04:16 AM What is FPS?
While you are at it, what is MMO?
I like the flight simulators however I haven't bought one in quite a while.
What are some good flight simulators?
I'd also like to know what are the good controllers for flight simulators?
Do they still make the force feedback ones? I have one from years ago I use on my old combat flight simulator but I'd like to get the full blown flight controls. Are there good ones and bad ones?
I just don't keep track of all the games now. I have no idea which ones are good or bad. Life is just too busy.
How does one determine if a game is good or not before dropping fifty bucks?

mike75 08-17-2005, 01:10 PM Battlefield 2- great game
I don't know 08-17-2005, 01:57 PM Do they still make flight simulators? :l
I'm currently playing stronghold crusader, stronghold 2 and.... starcraft brood wars for some reason - never got through more than half the humans on regular starcraft, but I've played through most of BW now.

Read the reviews from sources you trust.
www.gamespot.com is a good source for info on upcoming releases, betas, demos, and already released games. The also send out regular e-mails to their members about what content is about to hit the market.
Also, most big new games will have forums dedicated to discussion of the games. If you're looking into buying a game already released on the market, do a search for the OFFICIAL forum for the game, and see what people have to say about it.
Magazines like Computer Gaming World (CGW), Electronic Gaming Monthly (EGM), PC World, PC Gamers Magazine, etc. all have previews and reviews of games, and oftentimes come with demo CDs.
www.gamespot.com is probably the best source for finding the scoop on a game... they tend to be quite blunt and honest about what they think of a game. ...but no one will agree with a critic on everything. Also, even if a game is given a 9.5 rating, it doesn't mean you'll like it... it might not be your type/genre of game. (Generally if a game is rated below a 6 on gamespot, don't even bother investigating it anymore.)
If you are intersted in PC games... many of them have a try-before-you-buy demo that can be downloaded from sites like gamespot as well.
As, stage mentioned forums can be an excellent source of feedback... just as long as you keep in mind that even THE BEST GAMES have nay-sayers.
In general, just make a post on here, and we'll tell you what you need to know.
Probably even be able to offer a list of other games you could try.
I play everything worth playing, and a lot that really are'nt worth playing.
Don't ask me about sports games.

ToeJam 08-19-2005, 12:53 AM Thanks for the advice on where to go.
Is Battlefield 2 a good game? Worth getting? What is the consensus?
Thanks for the advice on where to go.
Is Battlefield 2 a good game? Worth getting? What is the consensus?
Consensus is:
Battlefield 2 is the best damn Multi-Player-Online Militaristic Shooting game on the market. They really did a great job.
Pretty much, if you want to play "Army Man" this is the one to get.
Many of us here own it.
Two thumbs up: :nice: :nice:
Beware though, you will need a good system to run it.

cajunfoodlover 08-19-2005, 12:55 PM World of Warcraft. Haven't touched my Playstation since I got WoW.
Monster 08-19-2005, 02:13 PM My copy of WoW was supposed to be here on Monday and it still hasn't arrived.
Damn bastages have my addiction and I want it!
ToeJam 08-20-2005, 01:44 AM I will get battlefield 2 since it seems to be so well regarded.
Thanks.
I will let you all know how I like it.
I don't know 08-20-2005, 09:53 AM I wouldn't count on running that on your laptop, though :p
NJ Refugee 08-20-2005, 11:19 AM Still playing Civ III, or rather my own heavily modded version of Civ III ... and waiting for Civ IV ... hoping against all odds that it comes out before I have to go back to Iraq again.
It would truly suck for Civ Iv to come out after I deploy. By the time I get back, everyone will have figured out the 'cheats' or sneaky tricks, and I'll still be learning ... and I'll get my @ss handed to me several times, I'm sure.
ToeJam 08-20-2005, 02:34 PM I wouldn't count on running that on your laptop, though :p
No, I plan on using my desktop.
