LAST week, Dane Cook's CD broke the Billboard Top 5 — a feat no comedy album has achieved for 27 years, back when Steve Martin was a "wild and crazy guy."
To which you might ask, Dane who?
Viewers of "Saturday Night Live" or comedy films may not recognize Cook, but college students, Comedy Central watchers and Internet surfers do. In fact, you could say Cook is the first Web comedian —
building up a large and loyal following on the site myspace.com.
Boston-based Cook, 33, used the popular networking service to promote his material, post pictures and interact with fans.
He also benefited from a much e-mailed clip from "Jimmy Kimmel Live" where the comedian performed a hilarious spoof of Tom Cruise's couch-jumping appearance on Oprah. The spot ended with him rushing into the women's bathroom, trying to drag " Katie Holmes" onto the set.
"The Internet was going to be my version of Aerosmith hanging out in '78 handing out fliers in Harvard Square," Cook told the Boston Herald. "I love it."
