So I know how to play instruments, have forever, but I've never played in a band or in front of people before. My brother calls me up yesterday and bluntly says "next week, I'm playing a show and you're playing keys."

Because there's too much to learn in such a short time and I'm a tad nervous to play in front of anyone, I was able to weasel it down to sitting in on only one song.

In anycase, here's the song:

Casa de Muerte (http://www.ripway.com/members/getfile.asp?file=\06%2DCasaDeMuerte%2Emp3).

I'll be playing a Korg and a child's bell piano. The song, as recorded, is pretty laid back, slow, and mellow, but we intend to bash skulls and rock it.

Also, just 'cause I like my brother's CD, here's two other songs.

Campground Ghosts (http://www.ripway.com/members/getfile.asp?file=\02%2DCampgroundGhosts%2Emp3) is a personal fave.

Larry's Great Western Meats Theme of Revenge (http://www.ripway.com/members/getfile.asp?file=\05%2DLarrysGreatWesternMeatsThem eofRevenge%28Reprise%29%2Emp3) was written as it was recorded (well, it's the third take). Our friend Seth has started and finished a bottle of Canadian whiskey within an hour and a half's time and we demanded him to randomly play something on the bell piano in his drunken state and this is what came out. The theme of the album is supposed to be a soundtrack to a Spaghetti Western that was never written, so it's supposed to be "Western" sounding.

well, if your a typical keyboard player you can probably play by "ear"..hell, yeah..have fun and go for it.

my first performance was at a junior high school talent show with a couple of buds..we didn't have a PA system so we played "wipeout" :D

your links wants a "sign in"..if you like, send me the files and i'll put them up in a folder at my yahoo account.

I listened to some of the Casa song. It sounds like he is messing around with the intro Stairway to Heaven riff (5th fret A minor, a little contrary motion, etc.). I believe you should crank it up a few notches and at least do a well known cover song.

Ha....I thought "final band practice" was tomorrow and the show on Saturday.

As it turns out, band practice just finished (didn't know about it) and show is tomorrow.

It's all good, though, I feel confident and I plan on getting pretty smashed on alcoholic beverages before the show. Dutch courage! Yo Oki!

We didn't play "Casa De Muerte" afterall, so I didn't have to do much at all. I did have to learn something literally at the venue before the show, but it was stupidly simply and only accounted for about 20 seconds of the song in question. It was the first song in the set, so I was able to slink away, join the audience, and sedate myself to alcohol and I really don't remember much of the night. :D

So I don't even know if I can count this as breaking the seal for performing the first time.

There were photographs taken and videos filmed, but I don't know who did what. But, since the set was EXTREMELY low key (in theory, it was supposed to only be an acoustic guitar and a microphone), the fact we brought a smoke machine and a slide projector made it pretty funny. And, when you're in a low key environment like that, the Mini Korg can really add "umph".

In fact, this is exactly what I was playing:

Heh, dig the microphone...a lot of ELO impressions can be pulled off with that thing. :D

I hate myspace, but I caved in.

The band I'm now in:

Another member of the same band, his solo music is an extension of our band and has the same exact members:

Myspace is pretty insane. From your site, I surfed to find a nice 19 year old chick. I clicked her pic, and it wants me to login or something. :(

You should consider your own domain name and site, or free sites dedicated to mp3's like Soundclick, dmusic, or Acidplanet.

I'm now a firm believer that at "band practice", you should play your songs as slow as humany possible. It seems like that's the best way to be "tight" as a band. It may be easier to play fast, but it doesn't sound as good if everyone's not hitting everything like clockwork, and playing slow forces you to do that.

Speaking of which, I was thinking....the term "tight", with regards to music is a term known by all musicians, but defined by nobody. Everyone knows what it is, but explaining it seems impossible.

Here's my attempt: when you listen to a band that isn't tight, you hear a bunch of different musicians playing different instruments all at the same time. You hear a bass, you hear drums, you hear a guitar, and so on. When a band is tight, all instruments blend together into a seamless machine...all the instruments compliment each other to the point it seems like a single force in motion. That's how I'd put it. :nice:
