LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - The search to find longtime stand-up comic D.L. Hughley his niche in the entertainment cosmos continues forth with "Weekends at the DL," a loosey-goosey half-hour talkfest that replaces "The Daily Show With Jon Stewart" on Comedy Central's schedule each Friday, Saturday and Sunday night for the next 13 weeks.
It's an innocuous and easygoing enough trifle from former "Late Show With David Letterman" exec producer Robert Morton. To its credit, it doesn't attempt to reinvent the wheel; on the downside, it isn't such a dazzling wheel to begin with.
Hughley, of course, had his own family sitcom on ABC for a couple of years back in the days (1998-2000) before "Desperate Housewives" and "Lost," when the initials stood for Already Been Canceled. "The Hughleys" then lasted another two years on UPN before finally bidding primetime adieu. Hughley also has been featured in stand-up specials and a couple of unsuccessful features like "Soul Plane." And now here he is attempting to slay the world of late-night talk, which is no place for a family man with hopes of long-term employment to be treading.
