View Full Version : Million Dollar Baby SpabSFW 07-31-2005, 10:46 PM Saw it. Cried for two hours, then got drunk. :( Anyone else? smalltown_honey 07-31-2005, 11:14 PM I watched it and expected it to be a Rocky-like movie and boy was I wrong....I needed a strong drink after watching it too.... SpabSFW 07-31-2005, 11:23 PM So I'm not the only one. It was an excellent film. Sad, but excellent. smalltown_honey 07-31-2005, 11:35 PM No the movie was a good one....it was just depressing . Afterwards I was bummed out. Battletoad 08-01-2005, 12:42 PM *Spoilers ahead* No one found it the least bit unreleastic that Swank's final opponent was allowed to do anything in the ring, and not be penalized for it? No one predicted the melodrama that would follow? Or that Danger's character would play a part on Freeman's...ah, **** it. This was a very, very mediocre movie. SpabSFW 08-01-2005, 02:09 PM That's not the point. In the ways that count, it was very real. For example, it's very real that for some classes, the vast majority of the time it doesn't matter how hard you try, you can never win. Dogberry 08-01-2005, 02:15 PM Good film, not the film I thought it was going to be. Two of my favourite actors, I hope they do more together. I bet spab liked it only for the Irish connection. :D turtle_o 08-01-2005, 02:17 PM Saw it. Cried for two hours, then got drunk. :( Anyone else? did you know it's a true story? She is a real person, not just a character from a movie. SpabSFW 08-01-2005, 02:18 PM LOL, dogberry. That was nice, but no. I have a fetish for all kinds of depressing film. The longer it makes me cry, the more impressed with it I am. Try "London Kills Me" sometime, or "Last Exit to Brooklyn". You'll cry for days. SpabSFW 08-01-2005, 02:19 PM did you know it's a true story? She is a real person, not just a character from a movie. :( I didn't but now I feel even worse. Gee, thanks. :( Dogberry 08-01-2005, 02:33 PM LOL, dogberry. That was nice, but no. I have a fetish for all kinds of depressing film. The longer it makes me cry, the more impressed with it I am. SpabSFW 08-01-2005, 02:36 PM Actually, I've missed that one, year after year. I don't know how. I watch a lot of film though, mostly "day-in-the-life" gritty independent stuff. I have a great list somewhere in my Journal, although I haven't really updated it in like a year or so. Dogberry 08-01-2005, 02:41 PM Actually, I've missed that one, year after year. I like James Woods and the story is very very gritty. SpabSFW 08-01-2005, 02:43 PM That movie totally totally rocked. Of course, I like Oliver Stone anyway. I own that one too; the soundtrack is wonderful! Have you seen the New Zealand thing, "Once Were Warriors" ? Another excellent and depressing film with a killer soundtrack. No never seen it, I watched a docu recently on New Zealand gangs, they were all painted like that. I will try and get it. Looks good. I cant recall seeing any New Zealand films, which is odd as i want to go there. If you like gritty films you should see 'The Hill' Sean Connery at his best, it is black and white and set in a Military prison. Big comment on the futiliy of military life. Also very depressing. My wife hates it. http://www.allstarz.org/~seanconnery/hill.htm I also liked the german film Das Boot, a war film as well but from a different perspective. Snouter 08-01-2005, 03:02 PM Actually, I've missed that one [It's A Wonderful Life], year after year. I don't know how. You have to be kidding me. It is one of the best movies of all time. "Das Boot" was good and I'll look for "The Hill" on your recommendation. I think you'll like "Once". After I saw it I went into a big NZ kick for a while researching the socioeconomic status of Maoris, the political system in general in NZ (and the history of that system) and made a stab at trying to determine whether there was a difference in the social status of women between the upper and lower classes. I've seen some docos on the tattooing thing and that is what that is, tattoos now, mostly. Not paint. In the past, that facial tattooing (which looks really cool by the way) was done by gouging out the skin in some kind of coming of age ceremony and you could only do it if you met certain qualifications including family and tribal background. You have to be kidding me. It is one of the best movies of all time. Ok ok, I'll try to get it this weekend. Geeze, what's with this movie. My main awareness of it as a movie is that it was mentioned by one of the priests in "Exorcist 3". The killer printed the title over the dead priest's bed in his blood, misspelled. I meant tattoo  There is a great (and true) story about the maori wars. The brits and maoris were slugging it out one day when the Brits stopped firing. The Maoris sent a messenger down to ask why. 'We have run out of ammo' was the reply. So the Maori's gave them some and they carried on with the battle. "Ok ok, I'll try to get it this weekend. The first 3/4 were excellent story telling. BUt it just fell apart with bad story and over dramatic acting. GROFF200 08-01-2005, 03:38 PM I thought Million Dollar Baby was one of the best movies made in a very long time. It's one of the few movies I've enjoyed in a long time that I think could qualify as actually being art. jojo 08-01-2005, 03:42 PM I enjoyed it. Unpredictable. Great Cast. Spab, I can't imagine anyone not ever seeing "It's a Wonderful Life". It's like on every Christmas season over and over. Hmmm..... SpabSFW 08-01-2005, 03:47 PM I'm always cooking around and on Christmas. I don't have time for tv. Lame excuse, eh? I don't know how I miss it every year. I just do. :| MamaG 08-01-2005, 09:24 PM I've never seen It's a Wonderful Life either Spab....so don't feel bad turtle_o 08-01-2005, 09:33 PM :( I didn't but now I feel even worse. Gee, thanks. :( but she's alive now.. she doesnt bite her tongue unto death anymore, and there's that tiny ray of hope at the end; that she lives, and has been able to find a meaning in her life. I agree it was sad too, but maybe it's supposed to be just a tiny bit bittersweet, and not just bitter. and manu, i thought their lack of overdramatic acting was what made it so good, maybe you saw something i didnt see. SpabSFW 08-01-2005, 09:38 PM I've never seen It's a Wonderful Life either Spab....so don't feel bad Hehheh, so I'm in good company. I wonder if eep has seen it :hmm: but she's alive now.. she doesnt bite her tongue unto death anymore, and there's that tiny ray of hope at the end; that she lives, and has been able to find a meaning in her life. I agree it was sad too, but maybe it's supposed to be just a tiny bit bittersweet, and not just bitter. . It's an improvement. :) and manu, i thought their lack of overdramatic acting was what made it so good, maybe you saw something i didnt see. In agreement with turtle-o Della April 08-01-2005, 10:12 PM That movie totally totally rocked. Of course, I like Oliver Stone anyway. I own that one too; the soundtrack is wonderful! Have you seen the New Zealand thing, "Once Were Warriors" ? Another excellent and depressing film with a killer soundtrack. I live here, and I haven't seen Once Were Warriors. My brother went with his g/f, and put me off - it's about domestic violence, and I've lived that, don't want to see it! We finally saw Das Boot this year - awesome! Two more amazing films - what the guy at our local video store called "sleepers" - Arlington Rd and Frequency. (It has a Quaid in it, but it's great anyway...) SpabSFW 08-02-2005, 12:49 AM I think it's makes a pretty important statement about domestic abuse and gives a ray of hope. You might give it a shot, but fair warning, it is graphic. Della April 08-02-2005, 07:45 PM I think it's makes a pretty important statement about domestic abuse and gives a ray of hope. You might give it a shot, but fair warning, it is graphic. Yes, that's what my brother told me, and so that's why I decided to give it a miss... Just my personal opinion. It is a good movie, though, from what I've heard. colonel 08-02-2005, 09:04 PM Two more amazing films - what the guy at our local video store called "sleepers" - Arlington Rd and Frequency. (It has a Quaid in it, but it's great anyway...) I watched Frequency on TV a couple of years ago and was pleasantly surprised. Great cast, great story. It was filmed here in Toronto. I caught MDB in the theatre back in Jan. or Feb. and started a thread on it. One of the most powerful films I've seen in many years. If memory serves I needed a few belts myself afterwards. I have a few reviews on imdb.com, which is  The most recent films we watched on DVD are Gone with the Wind (1936) and Snow Falling on Cedars. Both awesome! (I'd never seen Gone... before, and I was pleasantly surprised! Abyss is another sleeper. Truly. |
