I've seen a programme, I think it was a mini documentary done by one of the US networks, that blames farming subsidies for americans getting fat.
Apparently corn and corn products which are high in carbohydrates are among the worst and farming subsidies mean they are far too artifically cheap.
You could say tax makes you fat.
How come welfare for farmers doesn't carry the same stigma?
I'm kind of thinking that if someone is FAT....it isn't McDonald's fault or any farmer's fault.

The programme showed movie popcorn and the butter and the price of these products compared to others.
There are no subsidies here and it's still more expensive to eat right under the free market.
I eat WRONG under a free market and still haven'e gotten a fat A$$ due to it. I think people need to take responsibility for themselves and quit blaming other people for it. It is one thing which really annoys me...it's the trend in society to blame everyone else for your own screw ups.
I'm not saying this to you Terran at all.....I'm just saying it's a pet peeve about how that NO ONE wants to take responsibility for their own actions. It's always someone else's fault...and I find that to be so juevenile.

I agree with you largely about fault. When an informed person eats wrong then they should increase their physical activity to avoid getting a fat donkey.
But you live in the US which means you don't live in a free market. Your taxes make the wrong food so much cheaper than the right food.
McDonalds is there for selling fast food so sueing them is just plain stupid. The government however should switch subsidies or dumpthem in favour of a free market. I'd hate to think what insurance costs in the US compared to what it would without all the loading for fat related medical conditions.

I have the same pet hate, along with larger people muttering that I am "so lucky" to be so thin!! As opposed to just watching what I eat and doing ALOT of exercise to stay this way!
grrrrrr
Then again, I would rather be slim and active than fat, so I guess I will put up with it.

I really don't see how people can get that huge - I've been overweight in the past but it was due to medication. Most of my life I've maintained a healthy weight without any effort. I've never been one to deny myself if I want a certain food! I think there really is a component that's beyond their control that makes it extremely difficult for many people to maintain a healthy weight.

Terran's op is right, though the rest of you are right in saying people are responsible for their own health.
Food costs played a role in my attaining this heavy frame-I couldn't see paying more money to eat less-I finally learned,I feel better but it's a battle...
