View Full Version : Why Do Americans Hate Polticians?
fat mike 07-15-2005, 01:09 AM A politician's job is to figure out what people want and try to get it for them.
They manipulate,bully,stretch the truth,do a few fast moves,promise...
This is their stock in trade.
Why are Americans so unforgiving?
Democracy is a Political system, meaning people's opinions are more important than almost anything else.In Europe we have the tradition, the old regime institutions with their inalienable prerogatives, there is actually more respect,I think, for the Law per se,we have the shadow of those things but the people's opinion trumps them all.
So,why do we resent someone trying to do their job?
Discuss.
flaming_liberal 07-15-2005, 01:12 AM I don't think it's just Americans. I think people in general dislike politicians.
Pappy&Me 07-15-2005, 01:16 AM Maybe because they mirror our faults . After all we put them there .

Profound,sad and true.

Not necessarily! The Americans seem to hate them much more than any others do. I don't. Politicians do a job, they work in the best interests of those who elected them.
Never forget, as Noam Chomsky said - corporations are the real danger, because the ppl have no power over them. Governments can always be thrown out - every three years in our case, four in yours.
TheHound 07-15-2005, 01:21 AM Cause they're lying sacks of sh*t?
And no, they're not trying to do their job. They care for one thing - power. And people know it.

I think it's just Americans tend to focus on the outspoken majority who are so passionate. We stick them on tv and let them spew hate for the effect it has.

I disagree (from my experience). No, I am not a politician, but most have very little power - and a lot of grief from those who think they're power-lusters! (As in some cases, Dubya Bush, however....)
Corporate Avenger 07-15-2005, 04:09 AM I think a better question would be "why do politicians hate us"?
Ras Bizarre High 07-15-2005, 04:23 AM I don't think it's just Americans. I think people in general dislike politicians.
True.
Maybe because they mirror our faults . After all we put them there .
I didn't put any of them anywhere, neither did the majority of Americans (who don't even vote).
Profound,sad and true.
No, its not true. When did I ever put a politician in charge of my life?

Yes.
I think a better question would be "why do politicians hate us"?
Yes.
fat mike 07-15-2005, 07:15 AM Ras,you're intelligent young man but can we say your opinions have any semblance to those of the general american public?I think not...
Odysseus 07-15-2005, 12:58 PM This problem is not limited to the USA. In my opinion the population of almost all western countries hold contempt for their elected leaders.
Feenix566 07-15-2005, 01:05 PM because they're always ****ing with us.
politicians are people who want to "change the world", because they think that they know what's best for the world. so they impose their will on everyone else "for the good of society" and end up ****ing things up all over the place.
fat mike 07-15-2005, 01:39 PM The option being let things take their own course? There are always people vying for power,if you hamstring government the corporations end up subsuming the functions of government and you have a bunch of mean greedy people who don't even feel the need to pretend to be concerned for the general welfare of the people.

Also note that the problem is not limited to anarchists/the opposition party. I'm a staunch conservative, and support Bush, yet I know that ALL politicians yearn for power, and that the vast majority would sell their grandmother to rise in the ranks. To think otherwise is naive. But once you know that they're all basically evil, you can look at the issues correctly.
jwreck 07-16-2005, 02:32 PM i think the real question should be why do ploliticians hate america?
fat mike 07-16-2005, 03:05 PM Well you guys are certainly proving that politicians aren't a popular breed...I'd like to suggest that this role is the only one in which an individual's rights are even addressed.
Without laws and lawmakers we'd be at each other's throats or trying to survive out in the wild..
Pints with Plato 07-16-2005, 03:19 PM I personally dislike most politicians because they pander and misrepresent. And then in some cases they try to pander by saying they don't pander or misrepresent. I also dislike politicians who have no integrity or ethics. And then in some cases there are politicians who declare that they have integrity and ethics. These are most often the ones with absolutley no integrity and ethics. I dislike politicians who claim to act in the common good when they so obviously work toward their own good, which is then very often not in the common good.
So many of these guys are just used car salesmen to me. I don't believe a word that comes out of most of their mouths.
Some of the politicans (past and present) I most respect include: John McCain; U.S. Grant; Thomas Jefferson; Winston Churchill; John Kennedy (private dalliances aside); Theodore Roosevelt; Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain (less for his political work than for the life he lived); Jimmy Carter.
Why Do Americans Hate Polticians?
Because we are all filled with hate, and politicians happen to be easy targets.

X3nos 07-16-2005, 10:32 PM So you don't buy that,Michele?
hell no, they only say what they think you want to hear... they're not interested in what we really want, but to advance their own personal agenda.

Got that right.. I'm really confused to how a moron like President Bush can still be President.. but I have to remember the party he represents.
It's so CLEAR! :D

GROFF200 07-28-2005, 04:56 PM I propose that most people don't hate politicians, but rather they hate career politicians.
When the USA was founded, for instance, a lot of the politicians were primarily from other professions. They came to Washington, did their time, then went back to work on the farm, or printing press, or whatever it was they actually did for a living.
Now, our politicians' primary occupation is politics. I think this is why they seem to act in their own self interest, and why they are so generally despised.
Regardless of party affiliation, they are all part of a single group that looks out for its own needs first, and our needs second if at all.
