The Apple Development Platform ADP2,1, as the systems are officially designated, features 3.6GHz Pentium 4 processors with 2MB of L2 cache operating on an 800MHz bus with 1GB of RAM.
Along with running Mac OS X, Windows XP installs without hitch on the Intel-based Mac, just as it would on any other PC, and booted without issue when installed on an NTFS-formatted partition. The only misbehavior sources encountered involved the video card. Initially, Windows refused to budge from an 800x600 setting on a 23-inch Cinema Display. Some prodding managed to get the screen to 1600x1200, but sources were unable to get Windows to take advantage of the entire screen.

And there you have it folks. Now Apple's only big selling point left will be the ability to run OS X. Otherwise, it's just another Wintel.

I wonder what they are going to use to replace the G5's They are 64bit and appear to me much more advanced then anything intel has for the pc. The G5 has a 1.3ghz Fsb, and is capable of using 2 independant processors much more effectively then windows systems. I think this is gonna kill apple. :nonono:

The problem is, the G5 platform has been stagnant for over a year. The laptops are floundering because of it. The biggest boost will be Pentium M in notebooks.

The G5 has a 1.3FSB, but it doesn't utilize the memory well.

the other big factor is cost. This will open up apple to cheaper chipsets and cheaper processors.

Also, software compatability will be far greater...

Dr E- Intel Pentium D has 2 cores, 4 logicial cores, and is 64bit. Imagine a 4GHz 4 core processor with a 1066FSB...

Running on a better multithreaded OS than windows...I drool at the thought...

Ultimately, I'd love to see apple become a SOFTWARE company, and have the 3rd party oems handle the computers.

Make it JUST like wintel, but runs mac os and all those other great apple products...

Hmm, i wasnt aware that Intel made a chip like that. I was under the impression that it was just a standard pentium 4 chip.. Im not an intel fan, but the idea of having a powerful computer that will run OSX AND xp is rather tempting..

Yeah, Dr E. Their latest P4 EE. Its dual core with HT, and 2MB per core, and 1060 FSB (I believe, I may be confusing one on the roadmap)

Again though, I bet apple was 'satisfied' (though not happy) with their desktop processors (but the 3Gz mark was elusive and their dual platform required water cooling), but it was the mobile market that was in big need of something. Its been dormant for 2 years, getting a total of like 700MHz in gains...over 2 years...

Also, we must not look at Intel as they are today, but Intel as they sold apple where they will be 2 years from now...
