View Full Version : apple?
okay Im lazy, I want to know someting about apple.
what kind of apple computer would , say, equal a p-4? I think g-5 is the newest, right?
so g-4 maybe? what is a power mac, what doe sthe power stand for? are those mini macs any good? is it easy to get software ( sort of 'borrow' software, if you know what I mean..)
what about if Id use one for music, and needed a breakout box or something, or a soundcard?
I dont know anything about macs..what are pro's and what are negatives?
The G5 is the latest and greatest from IBM/Apple. It is a good processor, but it runs hot. In the desktop market, you're getting a G5, unless you get a Mini. In the laptops, G4 only.
The G4 is basically equiv to a P3 in power, maybe a bit more powerful clock per clock. The G5 has a pretty significant power leap over a P4, but it stops at like 2.8GHz. The higher end desktops are all dual. But, still, they compare moderately to your best P4 with HT enabled.
The Powermac is the desktop mac. The iMac is the integrated display mac. The mac mini is the budget mac.
Mac minis are great, if you want a mac, and want it cheap. If you're looking dollar/performance do not get one.
Borrowing software is easy, as long as you know a mac user or don't mind P2P programs.
Mac mini isn't good if you want to be able to upgrade. Its a PC, buy it as is. But, it is also tiny and fun.
USB breakouts are available.
I love my mac. Total convert. It is made well, OSX is awesome. The big con is if you want to play PC games, do not get a mac. Period.
If you want media/professional, internet/email/chatting, it is just as good (if not bette) than PC.
it is a disappointmnt that they are not so fast. cause thats kind of important with the whole audio recording/ applying effects stuff.
I dont play games, so thats no problem.
thanks manu, very clear.

No it isn't. Comparisons of clock speed are not meaningful due to the differences in architecture. Check out the benchmarks for the applications you use. The Macs stand up quite well.

wallijonn 06-14-2005, 01:49 AM Macs are great for people who are afraid of Linux and too dumb for Windows. Macs have always been cutting edge (SCSI, firewire, Blue Tooth, Photoshop, WordPerfect, flawless printing, video editing, music editing.)
I just picked up an iMac, 233 MHz flavour. I have a total of 192MB RAM and installed OSX. I can see quite a few holes in it (like un-installing software, setting up different users, needing to install OS9 before you can install a firmware update, to name a few.)
First thing I did was install FireFox, Thunderbird and OpenOffice. I may just install Ubuntu Hoary PPC Linux on it - once I get rid of the 4GB 5400rpm drive.
Before buying a Mac see what applications are available for it. Then see if you can afford the software. It's all about the software now.
Gosh....how could ANYONE be too stupid for WIndows and still live? LOL!

Try being a Tech Support Specialist. ;)
I have a friend who absolutely hates MS and BG. He hates installing OSes and doesn't believe in having accounts withot Admin rights, much less inserting passwords. HOSTS file? Forget it. SpywareBlaster? What for? Firewalls? Why do I need that? SpyBot? No way. Why should I install Anti-Virus software, MSN scans all my mail. I can't boot up and you want me to get into the Recovery Console? Fixboot? FixMBR? My printer has no driver... etc.
He loves OSX. He loves Apple Updater. He hates MS updater. He also tried FireFox and hates it, so I don't know what to tell him, all I know is that I keep supporting him because he's a friend.
btw, for those of you who have OSX - buy the Logitech MX510. You'll love it.
I don't know 06-14-2005, 07:32 AM I think that's one of the reasons apple sells at all. They take care with all those things that don't matter if you only want it to look good on paper. I heard that the P4 was actually made to have high clock speeds, so it'd seem better. All in all to make sure that no one regrets buying an apple product - because that'd really kill apple.

so how does it compare? your g4, how much mhz is it, and what would you say it compares to, in regulair pc mhz?

Just a note--some companies do in fact release OSX versions that run just fine. I'm a World of Warcraft addict and fanatic, and proud owner of a dual 2 ghz G5 desktop. All the Blizzard titles to date have released both for PC and Mac simultaneously, and there are other games out there that also release for both. That said, if you're a hardcore gamer in general, Mac probably isn't going to be your bag.
Note on the firmware updates needing OS9--as far as I'm aware since 10.3 no Apple computer has shipped with Classic installed. My desktop doesn't have Classic anywhere to be found on it, and while my laptop (an older G4 titanium powerbook) has classic installed on it, I haven't booted it in at least a year.

Macs are for people who are smart enough to want a machine that is user-friendly, easy to maintain and for which they do not have to hire expensive tech support people to make work.
I use a computer to do my job and to have some fun. I have absolutely zero interest in digging around its guts. I just want it to run the apps I use with no problems and with good performance.
Some people like working on cars; some people like working on computers. Most of us however, just want to drive and surf.
