Okay-

So I've got a new 16x Dual Format Double Layer DVD-RW.

I've got Nero 6 Ultra 6.6.0.8

I've got me a spindle of DVD+R Disks.

Yes, I know about the layer size limits- no issues there.

Now... Some of my movies back up just fine. They're 4.7 gig or under and fit fine on these disks. Some of my movies, same size, report 'Copy-Protected' and won't letme dupe them.

Again, these are just getting shelved as backups, they're all purchased disks.

Is there a way around that 'protection' crap so I can back up my disks?

I use DVD decrypter to rip the vobs to my hard drive, then I use Clone DVD 2 to shrink them down to fit on a 4.7G DVD.

Works about 80% of the time for me. Pretty simple process too.

Well, I don't need shrink (it's a Dual Layer recorder- If my movie disk is over 4.7 gigs, I'll use appropriate media) but I do need to get around the CopProc.

Betty, I just got DVD Decrypter. Now trying out my Nero burning rom to make the movie form it. Wish me luck

DVD Shrink will compress according to the media you are using (I think), and remove copyright protection while you're at it. That's what I've been using (on 4.7 discs though) and I've had no problems. DVD Shrink and then Nero kicks in after it encodes it and burns it to the disc.. super easy.

DVD Decrypter is a good (and free) tool to use when DVD Shrink has difficulties ripping a DVD"

I have DVD Decrypter on my computer but haven't had to use it yet...

Well, using decrypter to put it on HDD and then Nero to put it on a new DVD has worked for me now. Haven't needed to shrink anything, since the movies I'm baccking up are all 4.7 adn under in size. I have bigger films, and I'll use the DL media for that.

IMO they both do the same job. I just like the fact that DVD Shrink is so EASY to use. Click on "open disk", then "backup"... it encodes then automatically burns using Nero. No need to open up Nero and hunt around on your hard drive for anything. :)

how much are DL discs now? there for a while it was cheaper to buy the movie then copy onto a DL blank. I assume the prices came down?

They're generally about $5 a disc.

But, 2 hours worth of movie on a 4.7G disc looks great. If you don't have an HDTV, you probably won't see the difference.

I want to try to find a large quantity (like 100pack spindle) of DL on ebay.. would be much cheaper.

I agree. On my 46" HD I can see it's not quite as good. Almost as good as a digital satelite signal I'd say.
