I just put in a new stick of RAM into my computer and when I rebooted it went to the Windows XP splash screen and the just started BSOD'ing and rebooting itself. After I removed all of my USB peripherals it started working again without any problems, but when I connect anything to USB it happens all over again. Any ideas on what's causing this?

Are you sure you got the right KIND of ram?

If you remove the RAM, can you still get in fine with USB things attached?

Is your ram seated in order of site. Meaning Bank 0 has the biggest stick and Bank 1 a smaller one, etc.

They are both the exact same model and everything, so size and speed are equal. I thought at first the RAM was bad but when I took the new stick out it was doing the same thing when I started up. Very confusing...

Better yet, what board are you using?

You may need to update the firmware (flash the bios). Check the manufactures website for known issues. I had to flash the bios on my MSI board cause it was only reading 256mb of ram, and I had a 512 in it.

It's reading the full amount in BIOS and in Windows XP

do a search on the BSOD message on MS's site. thats usually a good start. i don't think it's the ram.

Yeah I doubt it's the RAM since it still did it without the new chip in it. I just don't understand what happened that this all of a sudden started happening when I put it in. The BSOD only stays on the screen for like 0.5 seconds before it shuts down and starts over again so I'm not able to read it.

I don't see any issues coming up in a search. I would probably follow Cbad's advice and update the bios.

Before flashing the BIOS I'd try this:

I've used it on over a hundred computers it's a great program.

http://www.memtest86.com/

If it passes, the screen will look like this:

(It will say "pass 1" and then repeat the test over and over again, if it fails there will be error messages below)

If it DOES fail (error message) then try testing each stick of RAM individually.

Its a windows thing, nothing to do with the new ram, since it is still happening. Though its always good to have an up to date bios, that shouldn't be neccessary.

I forget where it is, but windows xp restarts on BSOD by default, you can turn that off in windows...then get the message.

Try updating your USB driver.
