View Full Version : Who knows about PowerPoint?

I created a powerpoint presentation, and I really would like to get it on the web. I read a tutorial, and it said you have to save it as a webpage... Did that, and tried to upload it and it didn't work. I think the problem is the size is too big. What do you suggest... is there another way, or do you have to have a certain type of site? Right now I just have a couple geocities sites.

Thanks!

cindy

ps - sorry if this is in the wrong forum. please move it if it is!

I hope someone can help you with this one Cindy. I've always found that regular PP doesn't upload very well. Only a flash presentation will work. It's more trouble than it's worth for me.

Thanks Zoot... That's something else I want to learn about, isn't there a way to turn a powerpoint into flash?

The problem with ppts is that it might not play properly on other people's computers... and what about the music and video files, I know the pics are embedded in it, but the rest is in a folder.

I need to learn how to do this.

My son is already in bed. He's the only one here who knows how to do it. I think he went to a site and downloaded a converter. If it doesn't contain music or animation though....I would think any site such as Bravenet could upload without problems in order to give you a linking site.

I'll look into that. You're lucky to have someone around who knows about computers and all this. ;)

He'll be around tomorrow.......I'll see what information I can gather for you. He's only 13.....but he does this for teachers in his school. I would think Swift could answer this in a PM....he's probably good with puters also.

I use PP all the time, but never with vids nor uploaded it to the web

why would you need to upload it?

You should be able to upload the file itself

how does it blow? what else out there is comparable?

We use it as a training tool. We have a nice projector, use our digital images, put them in presentations and bam!

I don't see how we would get along with out it. HOw else can you train 15 people at once?

HOw else can you train 15 people at once?- If you want to show a set of images after one another, windows xp comes with a completely decent picture viewer already. Text can be added in paint shop pro. The "transition effects" in PP are really just annoying. If you want to get more fancy, you'll have to use a more complex tool (like macromedia flash) anyway. If you want to get less fancy, all you really need is a blackboard.

As for training people? depends on what you want to train them in :p

Yours is a clumsy, non-user friendly solution. PP is easy for people to use and can be integrated with other M$FT documents. It is a standard productivity app. Trying to not use it by cludging together a bunch of other apps may sound technically clever - but it is not what users want.

I will. hopefully someone can let me know what the solution is.

I want to upload them so I can show people who aren't in the same room as me. :) I put together 2 powerpoints recently with pictures, music, some special effects, and a couple short video clips... But I'm getting the feeling this is going to be impossible, because they're 10 minutes long, and I think way too big a file size to upload. I'm not doing mine for any business training or anything like that. :p Powerpoint is very limited, but you can actually do a little bit of fun, creative stuff with it.

Interesting link! Thanks. :nice:

To everyone else, thanks.... but I'm trying to upload it to geocities, they have their own uploading...it's not ftp. and I don't know if it's going to work with geocities, because there's a file size limit when uploading.

I think I need to just buy my own website. :hmm:

I agree that the effects are annoying and I do NOT use them. But, the rest of that...well, just doesn't work. :p

Stuffing the pictures in a folder and double-clicking the first one is clumsy and user-unfriendly now? Well, what do I know...

Yep it is. How do you link to source documents such as Excel charts which are commonly used in corporate PPT presentations?

What if you give to someone who doesn't have/use M$ Powerpoint? Thats user-friendly?

And I would, if I done what IDK said, take a shot of the chart and put that in the folder too ;)

buttercup, can't you just zip the video and pics with the powerpoint file and upload it to here (http://www.yousendit.com/). Then email all you're friends or whoever you wanna share it with the link with instructions to unzip and run the powerpoint file? Or were you looking for a broader less personal audience?

If so...

In business, if one doesn't have PPT, one is pretty much an outcast.

Open office opens PPT files just fine.

As for linking to Excel charts, I have no idea how to do that with PP, and a simple screenshot seems a lot easier. But I know what you're going to say: most business people have been trained in using M$ office products while they probably don't know what their prt scr button is for :P

No, that is not what I was going to say.

In PPT, one can create live links so that the presentation automatically updates when something in a data source is changed. This is much better than having to do a bunch of screen shots to update a presentation.

The issue is productivity - not maintaining a no M$FT at any cost just because we hate M$FT. When M$FT makes sense, I use it. When it doesn't, I don't - ie, I use a Mac for my personal business.

Thanks Rashid. Yeah, I was hoping to be able to post a link for a broader audience. I tried that yousendit link, and it said it could take 1 to 5 minutes... it's been trying to send for over an hour now, so I don't think it's gonna work. But thanks for the link, I can probably use it for other things. :)

Still hoping to do this, but I think I have to get my own domain.

An hour? lol. How big is this zip folder exactly...?

How big is your geocities space? Geocities doens't sound that good...but if you search around the web a little more, you can find far better and FREE web hosts. I wouldn't be so quick to dosh out money :p Then again...I am a tight git :hmm: Anyway, I'll try and find a descent host...anyone else know of any good free hosts?

Alternatively, you could host it yourself. But that depends on the purpose of the file and how willing you are to leave your computer on all night. (summin like an extra $600 a year :|)

Here you go, buttercup, 15mb free hosting without advertising: http://www.portland.co.uk/freewebhosting.esp

You'll have to use FTP though. And no adult material... :l

When it doesn't, I don't - ie, I use a Mac for my personal business.- I use MS when it's the best alternative as well, but MS office costs lots of money, and there are alternatives that are almost as good out there, and they're free.

PP seems extra annoying, especially because I've heard horrorstories of designers who've gotten assignments for making stuff in PP :|

I work in finance and frequently do investor presentations. The ability to refresh charts automatically is a big timesaver.

Freedom of choice is a beautiful thing. I wish M$FT had more competition. Cost isn't just in the initial price of the product. The productivity impact is just as if not even more important. It's not worth it to me to convert to a diffierent product unless there is a substantial new benefit.

PP seems extra annoying, especially because I've heard horrorstories of designers who've gotten assignments for making stuff in PP :|

It's not perfect - and it is not a graphic design package, ala Adobe Photoshop. It is just a package for people to make presentations.

IDK, thanks! It's actually the same amount of space (15 mb) as what I have now, but the no ads part beats geocities.

I think the file size of my powerpoint is too big for any of the free sites though... I didn't realize it was so big. :o Oh well...

Don't give up so easy! There are free sites out there that provide 100mb free space! I was shocked when IDk said 15mb...I thought it was a typo and he meant 150 :p Anyway, O-F (http://www.o-f.com) provides free 100mb hosting, though they have soooooo many ads and banners you could shoot yourself...or for the clearer thinker O-F ;) Besides, all you want to do is allow some people to download your presentation, the hosting is enough for that.
