View Full Version : strange firefox problem
it seems to have lost its ability to show pictures. all pics, gifs, jpgs, I see nothing but letters when I start firefox.
I did virusscans and spyware checks, nothing.
when I uninstall firefox, download the new 1.04 version, install, problem is still there.
(btw, when I uninstall firefox, with the uninstaller in the firefox directory , and then delete the whole directory, and I re-install, it still seems to know all my favourites. which must mean that those settings are stored somewhere else, anybody know where, and how to delete that as well? )
oh, windows xp.
Betty 05-30-2005, 10:14 AM Go to tools, options, and web features. Is the box that says "load images" checked?
If not, then check it, and that should fix your problem.
If it is, then have a looksie at the exceptions.
If that still doesn't work, then uninstall firefox one more time, and then go to regedit and remove anything that is related to firefox or mozilla. Reinstall firefox from that point.
load images is checked, no exeptions in the list.
where do I find regedit?
I suspect th problem is a littl bigger, since my soundcard allso has quit on me. I cant uninstall the program that runs the soundcard (called patch mix), it then sais that the program isnt tehre. when I try to install it again from cd, it sais theres a newer version allready installed, and quits installation..
allso, I had some files in my limewire (p2p) map, that couldnt be deleted. I had to delete the whole map, with all my mp3's.. aarg...
but no improvement. could the mp3 police have messed up my pc?
Betty 05-30-2005, 09:03 PM You find regedit by clicking "start", "run" and typing "regedit". You'll have to search through all the little categories to find the mozilla/firefox entries. It's pretty tedious and time consuming.
You'll find a majority under
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Mozilla
or
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Mozilla
Also ensure you completely delete the folders the uninstall may leave behind.
That's a pretty wierd problem. I'll look around the net and see if I can find anything about it. You can still see pics in IE, right?
If all else fails... there's always the final option of backing up all your crap on CD/DVD and doing a wipe, but I'm sure you'd rather avoid that.

yea, IE works fine. Ill try that regedit thing tonight, I can allso do that for everything related to my soundcard, right?
thanks betty.
okay, Ive tried that twice now, I literairy went through the intire register, and deleted everything modzilla. no change though, still no pictures, and still it somehow manages to come up with all my favourites when I re-install it.. where on earth are those kept?
Betty 05-31-2005, 12:57 PM Good god man, they bury those things deep.
Ok, after uninstalling, try also going to C:\Documents and Settings\your profile name\Application Data (it's a hidden folder so click tools, folder options, view and select show hidden files and folders to see it) and delete the Mozilla folder. If you have other profiles you may want to do the same for them too.
I did a little searching around this morning, and came up with another incident like yours on another board. In the end, the guy ended up reinstalling.:hmm:
Try physically deleting all of your cache.

doesnt explane it though...
next Im gonna try to get my sound back....
thanks betty. :nice:

The soundcard problem can probably be fixed in a similar manner. Try and track down the directory that it installed patch mix in. If it doesn't let you, sometimes you might have to run msconfig and see if it's in your startup. If it is, that can keep you from deleting it.
I had one program that was such a pain in the butt to delete completely that I had to delete it from the command prompt in safe mode. I hate those.
After all that is done with, you may have to reinstall the sound drivers. Occassionally, a program will alter the drivers, and this is where a lot of problems arise.
I wish I could actually see it. It's so much easier when it's right in front of you.
:nice:

I wish I could actually see it. It's so much easier when it's right in front of you. yea the patchmix starts up automatically so that might be it. and Ive allreay deleted the drivers. I had to, because I had updated them at the EMU site, and when my card stopped working, I tried to install again, but I couldnt. because there was a newer version allready installed....
Ill try tomorrow.
:w00t: sound has returned!! :)
2 days later, turn pc on, sound gone again....
install drivers all over again, sound back...
this is getting a bit annoying.
Betty 06-03-2005, 07:54 PM What motherboard/soundcard are you using?
motherboard I dont know, Id have to open my pc up to look. soundcard, EMU 0404.
its a gateway pc.
Betty 06-04-2005, 10:27 AM Is the onboard sound disabled in the bios?

Is the onboard sound disabled in the bios? my pc has no onboard sound. after my last pc, which did have that, Ive remembered to not ever get one like that again...
I dnt know, maybe its just that this card is not compatible with this particulair system? snouter has the same card, never heard him complaint about anything.
C-Bad 06-05-2005, 12:30 AM I would check that the sound card is inserted properly in the PCI slot. When the sound ISN'T working, is it showing up in device manager??
I'd do this:
1. Go into device manager and delete/uninstall sound card drivers (if it's there).
2. Turn off PC, open case, pull the card out, put it back in and make sure it's in good and tight, and the screw is in nice and tight.
3. Reboot and re-install drivers (if windows doesn't do it for you).
Stop using that unsuported garbage! .... use IE.
 It may not be Microsoft, but it's far from garbage. IE= spyware.
