Anyone ever thought of buying one? They can be gotten pretty cheap on ebay. I saw a dual 333 SparcIIe for about $500 with solaris 7 on cd included. Not practicle as a home PC, but I think this stuff would be hella intereesting to learn, and my own system would make that easy.

Whad'ya guys think? Should I go for it?

we used SUN's back when I was in CS in college, back in 93-95. It was a great upgrade from the VAX terminals we used in the earlier classes! I don't really remember anything else about them

Wow, I didn't know they were able to be had that cheap.

My only experience with Solaris is running telnet to a SOlaris webserver...

We dump old SPARC workstations every year as we upgrade to more powerful machines. I think they get donated to some University. That last bunch went to Stanford but I wouldn't be surprised if you could buy one to learn Solaris UNIX. I prefer Pspice anyway. The SUN isn't a replacement for a Windows machine.

Oh of course I'm not planning to replace my windows and linux machines.
This would just be pretty cool to learn on. I'd like to get a taste of what else is out there besides PC and Mac.

we use sparcs at fermilab all the time.
Im an NT admin, so i dont know much about the sun boxes.

I keep telling myself im gonna take a sun box home with me to learn on.

it would be a great way to learn unix, and knowing unix real well can be very profitable.

Fermilab, Thats cool... I don't live far from SLAC and Livermore labs, just a bustin nucleases.
