Actually, the origins of West Virginia are most interesting.
The northern six (I think that's correct) counties of VA were opposed to slavery during the Civil War and they supported the Northern cause, so they broke off from VA and were rather quickly made into a state. So in reality, they're all a bunch of Yankees.
