92Notch 04-24-2002, 02:13 PM I like to be out in the woods and/or shooting firearms.
I really really want to go hog hunting.
If anyone has some good outdoorsy type websites with forums please post links to them here.

California = good hog hunting.
They run wild all over the place, and some of the vineyards in this area employ people to shoot them, and then they just bury the carcasses.

Man, that's just sick. They make some good eating .... I wonder why they do not let people hunt them ... or at least donate the meat to feed the hungry.
Notch, ya ever been backpacking? That is some of the greatest fun I've had in the outdoors.
Out of civ for 4-5 days, going 15-20 miles, with only the stuff on your back...it is good fun...

Lateralis 05-22-2002, 01:59 AM I have a friend who owns some land out in Hunt, Tx (Odd, eh?) It's west of Austin and North of San Antonio if you're familiar. He has a ranch that resides between two tall hills and you drive through a river to get to the actual house, it's beautiful. Anyways, enough about the house. He has about three different areas of land out there, one for the house and two surrounding that's about a 5 minute drive away. The guys usually go out leaving us women folk at home. They bring back all sorts of things. He abides by all the hunting and license rules so he only shoots the alotted bucks and does. He's brought back a 300lb pig before that we had just in time for the super bowl one year. It was great. When they go wild boar hunting, it's usually at night with spot lights, I don't know if it's because they come out more at night or if it's more fun. I usually go with them when they go spotlight hunting. I got great spotlight eyes, I can see the light reflecting off anythings eyes. We saw a pack of wild boars once running once at night, must have been 6 of them. We also saw an axis(sp) deer once at night and if I'm wording it right had atleast 30 inches from point to point. I've been practicing my aim with some smaller guns but I'm not ready to take on the power of a deer rifle. The guy, (my friend) says he'll take me out hunting once I get the appropriate gear together. I do believe I'll be the first woman out on one of his hunts. I love going out to the land, I love escaping the city and I absolutely love the city. I don't mind hunting at all as long as people aren't killing off more than what's being reproduced. I hope one day to go to a different part of the country to see some other wild game and maybe have a chance to hunt it myself.
Sorry for the long ramble..! Take care!

The place in TX sounds awesome! I want to go Hog hunting; I'll probably try to go sometime next year. To date I've only been deer and Squirrel hunting (I've deer hunting ever year since I was 11 and shot my first when I was 12).
As far as shooting a deer rifle ... I'd suggest getting something like a .30-06 and hand load some light ammo for it (I was small when I was younger probably weighed only a hair over 100lbs when I first shot the .30-06). My dad loaded up some pretty light load ammo w/ 130 gr bullets to start me off, the recoil was light (real light) ... I also wore a PAST recoil pad on my shoulder, and my dad had put a pachmyer recoil pad on the rifle..... w/ the light ammo and recoil pads the .30-06 had virtually no kick at all ... and now I can shoot what ever I want in it (I'm bigger now and use to the gun, now I can shoot boxes of hot 165's at a sitting and not be bothered) .... I'm glad he got me the .30-06 instead of something like a 243 or 260...... The .30-06 is far more versatile.
I love sitting in the woods, last year was the first year in a long time that I shot a deer, not because I didn’t see any in the past .... I don't know I just did not feel like shooting them, but I loved it sitting there watching just the same. I do not think there is anything more relaxing than sitting in the woods alone w/ nothing to think about; I feel at home when I'm there.
I'm glad to hear you are wanting to get into the hunt. My girlfriend has come hunting a few times w/ me.... but she will not hunt (she'll help me butcher it and cook it, but she says she can not shoot an animal ... I don’t hold it against her :) )

It is sick. Some will let you hunt hogs, but they have to know you. People who just walk in off the street rarely get a chance.
