NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India's government proposed on Friday to change the country's patent laws to make it illegal to copy patented drugs, a practice that has made cheaper medicines available in India and abroad.

The bill proposed to parliament, which also covers other products such as chemicals, mobile phones and computers, would fulfil India's commitment to the World Trade Organization to recognize patents from Jan. 1, 2005.

Meh, why should impoverished people in India and abroad need access to affordable medicine anyway? There's tradin' to be done!

Heh heh...the reason for the legislation is to trample human beings underfoot in the name of "free trade".

Even some pharmaceutical companies in India are opposed to the legislation in its current form.

Domestic pharmaceutical companies and aid organizations working in developing countries have also expressed concerns.

The existing patent law has allowed drug makers to copy patented drugs as long as they use a different process. It has fostered a strong drug manufacturing industry in India for more than three decades.

Basically, India already produces a ton of drugs. However, the "value" of India's pharmaceutical industry to the WTO has been deemed insufficient. It's a very fine system for India's poor and sick, but that's not good enough because global capitalists see an opportunity to make money that's not yet being exploited.

So India's govt is basically going to watch their own people suffer in order to appease their greed.

Maybe they figure that with all those great new jobs being imported into the country, the "important people" will be okay as they enter the New World Order. After all, the caste system over there is already one of the most disgusting things in the world. I wouldn't put anything past those people.

I have a real good friend from India...and he says much of the same sort of thing Ras. Than again....our own prescription drug prices are equally as ASSININE! My neighbor was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.....his beginning drugs and test items totalled $900. His insurance only paid $500 of that. That's just messed up.
