View Full Version : Catholic guilt
elihu1996 01-30-2005, 07:10 PM We had a little one 6 months ago. Both my wife and I are non-practicing catholics. 12 years of catholic school.
Even though we haven't gone to church in years, my mother is trying to guilt us into having a christening (she hasn't gone to church in years either). However, she treats us like we are the worst parents in the world.
The easy solution is to have a christening, even though we have no intention of ever going back to the church.
Our question is -----
What other ceremonies are there, that are similar, to celebrate our baby's birth but don't have the religous overtones.

flaming_liberal 01-30-2005, 11:11 PM I don't think there is anything.

Tell your mom to back off. If she does'nt, sever contact with her until she changes her tune.
flaming_liberal 01-30-2005, 11:56 PM Or declare yourself a born again Episcopalian, whereupon you denounce the Pope as evil and Satan incarnate, and declare the Archbishop of Canterbury to be the true leader of the one, true Church. If she's not dead from shock, then you should be able to coax her out of her position.
DngrMse 01-31-2005, 12:13 AM Actually, I like FL's suggestion better than mine.

Actually, you can christin a baby on your own without having it done in church.
But if I were in your position I would just go ahead and christen the baby. Make your ma happy and provide an occasion for everyone to have a party and see the baby. Also, your baby will probibly get some good gifts out of the deal.
elihu1996 01-31-2005, 08:44 PM After your fine responses and denouncing the pope is really not worth my effort.....
We are going to have a christening, but look at it as a reason, to get $$, gifts and get drunk........
igofast 01-31-2005, 09:07 PM hey, we had a baby, let's get drunk!
