View Full Version : Best Sci Fi TV Series
I am a lifelong Sci Fi Fan. I was practically raised on Sci Fi. While other kids watched cartoons I watched the original Star Trek. I also became an addict of every cheap, sci fi movie ever made. I would spend hours watching Saturday afternoon TV. So here is my list...
1 The Invaders, I loved it when the invaders would die, their bodies would disintegrate.
2 The Prisoner, There were only something like 12 episolds of this Orwellian nightmare. Each one was a classic.
3 Star Trek, I am talking about the original series with William Shatner here.
4 V the Final Battle: Way overcooked drama about aliens who take over the earth.
5 Dr Who, Really more of a comedy than Sci Fi. I really loved it when they had Tom Baker. And those Dialects "Must Exterminate". Too awsome for words.
6 X Files, of course.
7 The Outer Limits: I considered a better series than Twilight Zone as far as the stories presented.
8 Twilight Zone, The best part was at the end where the cameras would go from the story to Rod Sterling who just so happened to be standing right there while he moralized about the show.
9 Night Gallery, another Rod Sterling creation
10 Johnny Sako, Remember that little Japanese kid and his flying Robot. I actually cried in the last episold when the Robot flew into the sun with the Emporer Guilitine and was vaporized.
11 Milenium, spin off of X Files, and in my humble opinion a far superior series.
12 Logan's Run, terribly overacted and extremely funny (not deliberately, just came out that way). Too bad the series was canciled in the first season.

jadatrack 01-23-2005, 12:50 AM x-files. only sci-fi series i ever really watched....besides the star treks, but that was just to spend time with my trekkie father
NJ Refugee 01-23-2005, 12:01 PM I'm surprised that no one's mentioned Babylon-5 yet ...
BadNews88 01-23-2005, 02:26 PM "DOCTOR WHO"
"BLAKE'S 7" (With the exception of the mass annihilation of the lead characters, the STAR included[!] in the series finale  )
The ORIGINAL "STAR TREK"
"RED DWARF"
Šñøü†ê® 01-24-2005, 02:42 AM 1 The Invaders
Never heard of it.
2 The Prisoner
Never heard of it.
3 Star Trek (original)
Yes, I agree that is the best of all time.
4 V the Final Battle
Never heard of it.
5 Dr Who
Heard of it, but don't remember ever seeing it; sounds interesting.
6 X Files
Boring and predictable
7 The Outer Limits:
Heard of it, but don't remember ever seeing it; sounds interesting.
8 Twilight Zone
Usually excellent.
9 Night Gallery
Not anywhere as good as the Twilight Zone
10 Johnny Sako, Remember that little Japanese kid and his flying Robot.
No I don't.
11 Milenium
Never heard of it.
12 Logan's Run
Vaguely remember it and as you indicate it sucked.
Although the Dead Zone doesn't qualify as sci-fi, it is borderline Twlight Zone type material, and is pretty good.
colonel 01-24-2005, 08:26 AM I don't know that I'd class Prisoner in the Sci-Fi catagory but it was a great show and far ahead of it's time.
Snouter...the show starred Patrick MacGoohan and was made back in the late 60's so it might be a little before your time. I've seen it lately on one of the specialty channels.
Some of my favorites were the Irwin Allen series from the 60's and 70's...
Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea.
Land Of The Giants
Lost In Space
Time Tunnel
Battlestar Galactica (original)
Battlestar Galactica (new)
Star Trek (original)
Star Trek TNG
Stargate SG-1
All Star Trek except original and enterprise
Battlestar Galactica ( new because I have never seen the original)
SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis ( though I prefer the analog stargate in the SGC compared to the digital one on Atlantis and the iris is cooler too!)
:D Forgot to add X-Files and Farscape! oops...
winters 01-24-2005, 09:40 PM I loved X-files in its hayday. I see that someone put up RED DWARF. I have heard a lot about it from a british friend of mine. Can you get those in the states? Are they worth it?
Two Way Radio 01-25-2005, 04:53 PM Right now I'd vote for Battlestar Galactica all-time maybe X-Files. But where's the love for Star Trek:The Next Generation? That show was great IMO.

"790 is a robotic drone who was decapitated and whose head was subjected to the mind-altering, falling in love component of Zev's love slave operation. When he opened his eyes after the procedure, the first person he saw was Zev: and his "heart" was lost to her.
In his original, unaltered form, 790 was half mechanical and half organic. He had some living organs -- recycled from unwilling donors -- and a metal head. His face reflects a range of human emotions, which is really his only means of expression. Without the ability to move around, his voice and face are the only way he has to communicate." - From Sci Fi Channel.
wakeful 01-29-2005, 06:11 PM TNG + DS9 (TOS and VOY I love as well, but they lack a bit, and ENT is a disgrace to the ST universe).
People mentioned Dr. Who - I love it, but - SF?
the_spaced_invader 01-29-2005, 06:36 PM I see that someone put up RED DWARF. I have heard a lot about it from a british friend of mine. Can you get those in the states? Are they worth it?
Red Dwarf is fantastic! I've seen the American pilot though and it's ****ing dire. No wonder it never took off over there! The British one's definately available on region1 DVD (Amazon have got it if nowhere else). I really recommend you watch it. If you think it's poo then you can blame me!
Jay GW 01-29-2005, 06:44 PM Star Trek the Next Generation was really good. Picard was better than Kirk....William Shatner had that toupee and was such a bad actor.
The new Battlestar Galactica has some interesting characters, special effects are good. It will probably be on for awhile.
Andromeda is not bad either. The characters are interesting - their interactions are pretty funny.
Nobody mentioned Farscape??
The Academy Of Science Fiction, Fantasy, & Horror Films
Saturn award: Farscape voted Best sci fi show on television two years in a row
TV Guide: Farscape "The Best Sci Fi Series on TV"
It was produced by the Jim Henson Muppets company, and they threw in every type of creature they could come up with.
It was cancelled a couple of years ago because it was too expensive to make. It had all the sets, mechanical creatures etc. that cost alot. Sci fi tends to be very expensive to produce. It's on dvd and you can download it (ethics aside). I recommend that every sci fi fan see it.

Gandalf 01-29-2005, 07:37 PM X-Files - Series 1 - 4 (after that it got stupid!)
Stargate SG1 - Made a average film into a damn good TV series (I'm including Atlantis in this as well)
Blakes 7 (but looking at it now I have to laugh at the guns which look like curing tongs !!!)
Star Trek the Original Series (so cheesey but so good !!! And its not all PC like the new Star Treks!)
V - Totally cheese again but so bad it was good :D
Seen a few episodes of Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars and they were good so I think I will have to check out the rest.
Lexx, I watched a few episodes a couple years ago and couldn't figure it out at all but one thing did stick in my mind.

Yes, Eva, the first Zev, was a stark beauty for sure, but I forgot all about her once I saw those arousing duck lips (DSL) of Xenia.
wakeful 01-30-2005, 06:31 AM Also, I've dowloaded some Space 1999 episodes in nostalgia. Yep, they are pretty naive nowadays, but I still enjoy them.
Gandalf 01-30-2005, 06:40 AM Hmmm forgot about Space 1999, used to love their Spaceships !!
Geoffrey 01-30-2005, 08:29 AM I watched the first few eps of Farscape on DVD on a trip last summer. I really would like to see more!
Neanderthal 04-03-2005, 05:38 PM Stargate SG-1 & Stargate Atlantis
Lrechna 04-04-2005, 12:16 AM Star Trek: TOS, TNG, DS9. Voyager had its moments, but Enterprise sucked balls.
Red Dwarf Rocks :nice: The Twilight Zone :nice:
Brian 04-05-2005, 09:20 AM Star Trek: TNG ruled the trek universe. DS9 & Voyager were good.
SG-1 & Atlantis are very good, also.
The new BSG has the potential to be bigger, not necessarily better than Trek, but it is still excellent.

kellet 06-08-2005, 06:47 AM I am a junkie for sci-fi, but somewhat picky.
1. new Battlestar Galactica, of course
2. Star Trek TNG
These are tied imo right now, I also will watch DS9, SG-1 or Andromeda but avoid Farscape. But right now, since I have seen all the TNGs so many times, Battlestar Galactica has my heart. Unless someone re-did Dune again, I just can't get enough Dune, ever.
Epicius 06-08-2005, 04:54 PM Stargate Atlantis and SG1, Farscape, Star Trek - all barring the first series James T Kirk has no idea how to be a commanding officer! LEXX and Eva Habermann gets my vote. Doctor Who is more science horror but I have watched every episode ever made. The new Battlestar galactica shows promise.
boedicca 06-08-2005, 04:58 PM I'm surprised that no one's mentioned Babylon-5 yet ...
My first thought as well. B-5 was the best series, imo.
I also enjoyed the Sci-Fi Dune mini-series. It wasn't great - would have been better with a bigger budget. But it was far superior to the David Lynch mess.
lilnymph 06-08-2005, 05:11 PM love lexx, and prefer Xev to zev ;)
Also like babylon 5, andromeda, farscape, first few series of X-Files, and quite a few others

They had better casting in the mini for certain characters, especially Duncan and Chani. Otherwise I preferred the cast from Dune 1984 but I really liked how they stuck to the story pretty well in the mini.

Er, sorry, Daleks. But I agree with you...Although I am not so sure about Logan's Run. I'd nominate Ultraviolet, but it's a British show, only shown here in Noo Zilland when it was already old. Anyone heard of it? Oh, and Blakes Seven...
6 X Files, of course.
7 The Outer Limits: I considered a better series than Twilight Zone as far as the stories presented.
8 Twilight Zone, The best part was at the end where the cameras would go from the story to Rod Sterling who just so happened to be standing right there while he moralized about the show.

Of course Dr Who is SF!
Rhuid 07-02-2005, 08:12 PM I always enjoyed John Doe on FOX, and I also think that Stargate SG1 is probably one of the best sci-fi series on TV right now. The best ever? That's a tough one, but I'd go with Star Trek: Deep Space Nine or Babylon 5
Erhnam 07-02-2005, 09:45 PM I'd have to say Babylon 5. Ignore the first season or two. =P
SivVulk 07-02-2005, 10:27 PM 1. The Lost World
2. Star Trek Voyager
3. Star Trek Original Series
Erhnam 07-02-2005, 10:43 PM Star Trek Voyager > Star Trek Original Series ?
No way.
Only thing good about Voyage was that hot spandex-clad tit monster , oh, and who can forget the cute little dishwater blonde "girl next door" --- THAT THEY KILLED.
( as a side note, I actually liked the girl next door better.)

Yay, Babylon 5! All seasons... We just bought all of Crusade on DVD. Awesome!
My top 10 science fiction series
1. Babylon 5
2. Crusade
3. Ultraviolet
4. Blakes Seven
5. Red Dwarf
6. Doctor Who (but not the current series - we haven't seen it yet.)
7. Star Trek TOS
8. Star Trek TNG
9. Dune movie 1981
10. Dark Skies
Erhnam 07-02-2005, 11:08 PM Speaking of which, anyone else notice the PC-ness of Voyager, too?
I mean, how could one miss that the "captain" is not only female, but a rather butch lesbian looking one at that. Then we have her Hispanic cabana boy first officer. Two words: black Vulcan. The we have the honest, hardworking, intelligent, and Asian Harry Kim in the background for an occasional cameo. If they are white, they are female. Oh, wait, there was a white dude, so insignificant and I can't even recall is name. I just recall him as "the sleazeball."

If you mean Tom Paris, he's the only one who showed any character development in 7 years, and any story development. He got the promotion, the wife and the child. So, I couldn't agree less about Voyager being 'PC'. It was the usual American TV white man as representative of the viewer Non-PC, thing... Ever notice what a loser the woman Captain was? What a loser the Asian male was - no promotion, nothing, in 7 years?

The entire cast was essentially non-white males, but you have no idea what I mean by the series was PC? Well, I believe there is no discussion worth having here, then. Stay in your current fantasy world, please.
Rhuid 07-02-2005, 11:50 PM Well..I think Voyager was actually kind of lame really. The first few seasons were good..then from Season 4 until the final episode of Season 7, it hit a slump. Even the final episode was a bit of a letdown, because they yet again involved Time Travel, more time paradoxes and all of that jazz.
I was always miffed about Harry Kim never getting a promotion. Remember when Paris was stripped back to Ensign and sentenced to some jail time? Well then in Season 7 when he gets promoted again to Lt. Harry Kim stands back there and makes a mention about how he didn't have any pips on his desk. It's just sad that the only time we saw Kim with a higher rank was in the future as Captain.
Rhuid 07-02-2005, 11:52 PM Yay, Babylon 5! All seasons... We just bought all of Crusade on DVD. Awesome!
I love B5, especially season 2 and on. I never was able to catch Crusade at all, is it worth picking up on DVD? B5 was very under-rated in my opinion, I'm still hoping for that oft-rumored B5 Movie.

As you wish! So, they were not "white males", big deal!

In my opinion, Voyager was so much less than it could have been, and by season five or six, they were strip-mining ideas from TNG. I so agree about Harry Kim!

Crusade is brilliant. We saw it on TV, and then have rented a few eps on video. Since then, we've finally got the chance to see B5, all of it in one very long go (having got all of it on DVD). Having seen Babylon 5 has added so much to Crusade, it means a lot more than it did.
Some things (technomages) are emphasised more and others (telepaths) much less. It is such a pity it didn't last...

It's QUITE a big deal when determining whether or not the show is a PC joke, which it was. Try to keep with us here, eh?

Maybe some people (including myself) just weren't ready for a space western. And the episodes weren't shown in order. But check this out:
FIREFLY (FOX) - The Sci Fi Channel has landed the repeat rights to all 15 hours of the short-lived FOX series (and basis of the upcoming "Serenity" feature film). The network's July schedule lists the series as joining its Friday lineup on July 22 at 7:00/6:00c where it will precede original episodes of "Stargate SG-1," "Stargate Atlantis" and "Battlestar Galactica."
I think Sci Fi wil show them in their proper order.

Hopefully the movie (serenity) will show people how good the series really was too, showing them out of order was a stupid move by fox, I think it hurt the series.. the are in the correct order on the DVD though.
