Hi, I couldn't post a thread earlier cause we had to leave, so now I'm posting it. I'm not at the internet cafe now, I'm at the house we're staying at, using the personal computer of the person who owns this house, so I can't be on for too long.

We took a ferry from Malaysia to Indonesia on January 8, so I've been here in Medan, Indonesia for about a week. We're working/doing ministry (and living for 2 or 3 weeks) at an orphanage... it's called Elida Children's Home, and it's a Christian orphanage, owned and run by a man named Pastor Domi and his wife Sarah.

The kids here are so beautiful. They may be poor, and without parents, but they are so blessed because they all are brought up to know Jesus and they truly are devoted children of God. You should see when they sing songs during praise/worship... they have a lot of passion, it's amazing... these kids are more spiritually mature than a lot of grown-ups, if you ask me... and they're really well-behaved and precious. Pastor Domi and his wife have done a fantastic job with these kids.

There are 80-something kids here now, but he is expecting 30 more, who are victims of the earthquake, and now parentless. Even though there are thousands of orphans, he can't take more than that at this time due to funds and lack of space, etc.

Our team is helping in different ways... we originally planned a bunch of different ministries, teaching them English, arts and crafts, teaching them songs, playing games, etc. We have been doing some of that, but the first thing we saw was the need for lots of practical work, so we've been doing that first.

And guess what? Pastor Domi didn't have a website, and he's been wanting one for a long time now, so he asked for anyone who could create a site, so I got the fun job. :D Actually, me and someone else on my team, Eivind, got the job of putting together a website for the orphanage, and I want to give you the URL.

It's not finished yet, we still have to add a few pages, and we also made some changes that need to be uploaded, but at least you can see it now... it's almost done.

There is A LOT of need here. There's so much poverty in Indonesia, and like I said, these kids are awesome, but they are poor... If anyone wants to help, this would be a great place to do that... Like I said, he is expecting 30 more kids who are victims of the earthquake, and this orphanage already has a lot of needs even without those kids.

If you want to help this place, there's an address on the site, but if you have any questions you can pm or email me (webms_cindy@hotmail.com)

Here's the new website... but like I said, keep in mind it's not quite done!

http://www.elida.net.tf

(let me know if it doesn't come up! I tried getting on it earlier today and it didn't work, but then it was up later.)

There's a lot more to say, but I can't be on this computer too long.

Let me know what you think about the site!

Love,
cindy

Thanks you guys! I'm back here at the internet cafe.... We haven't been able to upload the additions/changes to the site, because Pastor Domi's internet connection is not working. So you're not seeing the new version of the site... We added stuff on a few pages and on the volunteers page there should be a slideshow of most of our team.

Anyway, I won't be online for a few days because at 11 today we're leaving for the mountains, to go to a village for 2 days to do ministry.

I'm told there will be no western style toilets, no beds (mats on the floor) and only cold water... but I haven't had a hot shower since we got to Malaysia, so I've had to get used to cold showers. The conditions are supposed to be rough, but I've been learning a few things through all this... one of them is, this is not about me, or my likes/dislikes... so I need to just grin and bear it. :o

I'm not sure what exactly we'll be doing... I think maybe some songs, a skit, some testimonies, giving messages and stuff like that.

So I have to leave in a few minutes. I'll have that site updated when I get back in a few days.

Thanks so much Alan for your support and prayers!! And thank you Jim, I appreciate you guys... and it's always great to see you post on my update threads.

See you when I get back from the village!

Love,
cindy

What might work is a make-shift solar heater.

If you can get some 5 or 1 gallon containers, leave them in the sun on top of some metal sheets, like corrugated steel or aluminum, that will heat up the water, you can then soak in it like a bath.

OR, there are portable showers you can get as camping equipment, we can ship some over? It will take a month by mail, though.

You just hanf it from the rafters or the cieling somehow, or a tree if it is all outside.

Hi! Well, we got back to Malaysia on Saturday.... we stayed in Indonesia for an extra week.

It was really great to be able serve the orphanage. Like I said before, the kids there are so precious and everyone agreed that even though we were supposed to be there to bless them, they ended up blessing us even more because we were all touched by their spiritual maturity and passion that you can see when they worship/ pray, etc. The funny thing is, they woke us up every morning at 5 AM with their singing, because that is their praise/worship time, (and also at 6 pm) and those kids don't just sing, they BELT OUT the songs as loud as they can, and they clap their hands really loud... you'd have to be there to see how sweet it is, it is so cute.

As a gift to them on our last day there, we got ice cream for all of them, and we learned an Indonesian song that we sang for them (and we even sang it like they do, clapping our hands really loud), and we did a drama on the story of Joseph, and also spoke to them (through Pastor Domi who translated) and gave them encouraging words about their future.... and also one of the guys on our team gave a guitar to the older boys who played guitar... AND, I had put together a PowerPoint presentation that we showed them Friday night. It was 11 minutes long, and it had tons of great photos of the kids, and some funny ones of us, and it actually turned out really good! We put a couple video clips in it, and music, and special effects... it was really fun to work on. If anyone wants to watch it, I'm going to try to upload it to the web.... Anyway, the kids loved it and they laughed a lot at the photos of everyone.

Now we have one more week here in Penang, and then we're done! But we go to KL for a few days before flying back to Kona. So I'll be back in Hawaii around the 9th, and then after outreach I'm going to head over to Maui for 3 weeks :w00t: :eekdance:, before going back home to CA. One of my best friends, Brent, lives in Maui, so it worked out perfect because my plane ticket isn't going home till March 6th, and I've been meaning to go there to visit him, and it will be great to relax and have time off to rest and figure things out. (I'm pretty sure that I'm going to be taking SBS... School of Biblical Studies and it is offered at YWAM locations all over the world. I just have to figure out where God wants me to take it... I have a few places in mind, one of them being Kona again, and a couple other places that I'm thinking about are Switzerland, or in one of the US locations, but SBS is only offered at a couple of the US locations. It's a 9 month course, so I have to make sure it's in a place I like.)

Btw, the website we created is updated.... take a look!

http://www.elida.net.tf

Sometimes it is down, I'm not sure why, but if it is keep trying.

I think I'm the only one on DA right now (what time is it over there?) but now that I'm back in Penang I'll have a little more access to the internet.
