Men of the 8th Parachute Division were called upon to neutralize a group of die hard SS and German Partisan's (Werewolf units) in the first days of May 1945. They dug themselves in within a forest called Forst Segeberg in Northern Germany. They were intent on battling against 2 Battalions of the British 11th Armoured Division. In Flensburg on the German/Danish border, Admiral Doenitz, now chief of state after Hitler's death, ordered them to surrender. When they refused Doenitz dispatched some splinter groups of the 8th Parachute Division to deal with them. Under the eyes of the British, a fierce battle broke out between the two German forces. The remnants of the fanatical SS Kampfgruppe surrendered a couple of days later.

Interesting. Gotta give the SS some credit for sticking to what they believed in, even though they disobeyed orders... Sometimes you gotta put yourself in their shoes... If you were a soldier in a unit fighting the enemy, and YOU were told to surrender even though you saw no reason to, would you? Or would you do what you thought was right (continue fighting to defeat your enemy). I think these guys were/are a bit misunderstood.

I see the Werewolves as the German's answer to the Partisans. They were very much similar to the Soviet Partisans who waged a guerilla campaign behind enemy lines when the Nazis occupied their nation. Unlike the Soviets, they did not have the sponsership of a powerful parent force like the Red army. Furthermore, it became clear to the German people that occupation of the western allies, British, American and French was preferable to the cruelty of the Soviets. The underground Nazis who fought against the western allies found an increasing number of their own countrymen who were willing to collaborate for their own survival. In the Eastern zone, Soviet methods included the execution of civilian hostages so Germans were very much afraid to fight their occupiers. This was the reason the underground war did not succeed. The one thing that finally killed all resistance was the creation of two national states: A democratic and capitalist one in the west and a Soviet Satillite state in the east. It soon became clear that if the Nazis were to go on fighting they would be killing their fellow Germans and this was the last thing they wanted.
