NEW YORK (AP) -- A 12-year-old boy from Nigeria swallowed 87 condoms filled with heroin, flew to New York and became sick before meeting whoever had promised him $1,900 to act as a contraband courier, authorities said.

The boy's father is imprisoned in the United States for recruiting drug mules to smuggle heroin into Georgia.

The boy, identified as Prince Nnaedozie Umegbolu, was listed in stable condition at New York Hospital Medical Center of Queens. Officials said 85 of the 87 condoms had left his system as of Thursday evening.

The boy has been charged with juvenile delinquency drug possession of a controlled dangerous substance, said Steve Coleman, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which runs area airports. His case will be handled in family court.

Airport detectives said it is not uncommon to find adults acting as drug mules, but it is rare for a child.

The boy arrived alone at John F. Kennedy International Airport at 10:30 p.m. Wednesday on a British Airways flight from London, Coleman said. He hailed a cab and went to a Brooklyn address, but no one was there, Coleman said. He then went to LaGuardia Airport before becoming ill.

Authorities did not know for whom Umegbolu was carrying the heroin.

Umegbolu, an American citizen, had been living with his grandparents for the past two years in Abuja, Nigeria, Coleman said. His mother, Alissa Walden, lives in Norcross, Georgia. There was no telephone listing for her, and she could not immediately be contacted for comment.

The boy's father, Chukwunwieke Umegbolu, is imprisoned in Petersburg, Virginia, according to court records. The elder Umegbolu was convicted in 1995 for his role in a drug ring that imported at least $33 million in heroin into Georgia over a decade.

Jebus, he was only going to get 1900 bucks for carrying that much heroine? Bah.

But yeah, I never could understand what would get someone to make that first leap to inject themselves...scares the crap out of me...

But I guess thats why freebasing (smoking) heroine is becoming more popular.

Is that a world record?

LOL ;) If the child was a "prince" was he theorectically destined to be a "king?" That prince and his father king Chukwunwieke Umegbolucan can kiss my a$$. Keep in mind the insane drug war creates these situations that forces taxpayers to support Chuk in the big house and Chuk Junior in the hospital. No drug war, no smuggling and illegal drug dealers.

huh? We should have smuggling and drug dealers?

I agree, the drug "war" is kinda a joke.

What Snouter is saying, if there was no war on drugs (i.e legalization) the need for drug war lords, smuggling,e tc would drop substantially.)

True, maybe, but it wouldn't be without its problems. I don't want to live in a world where everyone on the street is legally high all the time. I don't want a world where I am forced to pay high taxes so that the goverment can pay to subsidize all the addicts rehab. No easy answers.

Why do people assume that everyone would be legally high all the time? Is everyone always on the streets drunk because alcohol is legal? Who said it would be legal to be high on the street?

Yea seriously. I think maybe it has to do with all the propaganda, DARE and what not. Funny thing, my old man was a cop for like 30 years and even he admits DARE was largely a bunch of lies to scare people.

*shrug* You and I know legalizing drugs would be a mature move. I guess it will have to wait until our economy crashes, and we don't have the money to stop drugs from moving.

Public intoxication is illegal in many places, why not public highs?

And further, alcohol IS legal, and everyone is not drunk in public always...

Wow, that's great. Are you suggesting that the lack of a war on drugs would be a good thing? ..... If you are, than that is the stupidest thing I've ever heard. I'd rather have my money putting sick people like this in jail than supporting 200 million crack heads that can not hold a job because their too ****ed up to make it to work on time. Yeah ... we should be passing Heroin, Crack, LSD, etc out to everyone.... that way they can sit around all day long getting ripped and since we (our tax money ... you know us "normal" folks that are left and are still working and paying taxes) will be supporting their "habit" ("or now legalized recreation"). Yeah, by legalizing drugs and getting rid of this insane war on drugs we would certainly be building a better society, a society where everyone gets along and contributes to the best of their abilities..... So long as our tax money is supplying the drugs we will not have to worry about criminal activity surrounding the peoples "need" to purchase the drugs.

LOL

Yeah, no kidding.

How many people do you know that drink beer(s) regularly and go to work everyday? I know I do.

How many crack heads do you know that hold down jobs (and pay taxes).

you may have missed my point.

Well, I just think it is extreme...

Look at countires like the Netherlands. Tam is pretty much 'striaght edge' yet he's in a drug user candy store. He doesn't go to work high, drunk, or anything.

How many drug users do you know? I know a few. The illegal ramifications do not outweigh their desire to use drugs. Yet none of them go to work stoned. (this was different in high school where I knew quite a few people that went to work after smoking pot.)

But out of people that are holding 'real' jobs, that I know, and that use drugs, they do not go to work high, because they know the ramifications of their actions.

That's the key here, and it sounds like you have more faith in people than I do.
