View Full Version : What diets really work?

A friend told me about the Atkins diet. I don't know if it would work for me because I very rarely eat meat and when I do its in something like pasta or such. I cannot stand steak for instance.

Now it seems like every year a new diet is popular. Once it was to eat as much starch as possible. Another was to eat fruit in the morning and meat in the evening. Then there was the "Fit-for-life" plan that was all the rage in the late 80s.

What really is best for loosing weight?

Eat less, exercise more.
Reducing calorie intake and increasing the calories you burn off. It's the basic fundamental theory behind every diet.

diets like the atkins and southbeach work at getting weight off fast, but if you dont stay on the diet permanently you havea pretty rough time keeping it off.
I dont know how healthy the atkins diet would really be long term.

The southbeach diet is probably more healthy in the long run. It is a variation of the atkins diet.

But probably the best bet is just to do a lowfat diet and excercise.
If I had any will power, that is what I'd do.

I heard not stuffing your face with cheetos and bon bons works pretty well.

I think the Large cheese pizza dipped in ranch dressing served with the Super sized diet coke doesn't work

Eat foods low in fat. Exersize.

I found out recently that I have high cholesterol and my doctor toldl me to follow a diet that is low in fat, cholesterol.

Therefore, I have to avoid the following:
Chocolate - high in saturated fats
Most cheeses - high in saturated fats
fried food

Also, cut down on large portions. And instead of eating 3 meals a day, eat about 5 or 6 smaller meals per day.

Eat whatever you want, excercise only if you feel like it and smoke plenty of meth. :nice:

I was having weight problems when I was young, and then I started my university studies and was so busy that remembered to eat only when real hungry. No weight problems since.

You're lucky. I feel like I eat a lot more when I am busy - the vending machine diet as I like to call it. I think way too many people are looking for some fad diet to lose weight. I wouldn't recommend the Atkins diet unless you are planning to stick to it. Otherwise its a big waste of time and just an excuse to pile on the fats.

I would just talk to your doctor. If he/she knows your weight history, they can probably recommend a good diet that's right for you.

I was skiny as a rail most of my life.
Now I need to lose 10-15 pounds.. not much but unfortunatley it's all in my torso and face, so it is rather unsightly.

if I ever have an ounce of willpower, I will lose that weight and not want to vomit every time I look into a mirror.

I think you need a balance of food in any diet. People keep saying carb = bad, but look at asian people. On of the staples of their diet is a carb (rice). Asian countries have a very low obesity rate.

You need some fat in your diet, but it should be polyunsaturated fat. And exercise is a must. Any diet that claims you can drop the wieght without exercising is a hoax in my opinion.

EDIETS and the Ann Collins diet are very good balanced diet. I think the Ann Collins diet gives you recipes and stuff for like $9 on time payment. Ediets is kinds pricey. But all the info is available on the net for free you just have to serach for it.

You're lucky.

I know. It works for those who don't have a real tendency for weight problems.

Really? None of them..

Every few years there is another big fad diet that comes along.

The vast majority of people that go on diets gain the weight right back when they go off the diet, and they yo-yo which causes the body to permanently store more fat (see Oprah Winfrey for a good example).

The best way to lose the excess fat and to be healthy is to eat healthy foods, it's really simple, cut out the fast food, the processed food, the simple sugars found in sweets, soda's, the trans-fats, etc. And you have to exercise, without exercise, forget staying in good shape and health, especially as you get older. Problem is, most people are too busy to eat healthy and exercise, so they grab a quick meal from a fast food joint, wolf it down, and don't any sort of metabolism raising exercise.

So what you want to do is to adopt a healthy lifestyle, that includes exercise, a healthy dietary intake, and a healthy environment.

I used to be heavier as a kid, but the older I got, my Dad told me a good way to keep your 'girlish or manish' figure is to only eat when you're hungry. You will shrink your tummy this way.

Also - drinking lots of water (64oz.) per day. That's key! :nice:

Its helped me maintain...although once I hit 30, pounds stayed on that never did before! :P

You'd think this would be common sense, but people don't seem to grasp it. Funny how they're only making their situations worse in the long run when they resort to fad diets to lose a few pounds in a big hurry. :D

People DO grasp it. Maybe they just don't have a metabolism as abnormally high as yours. Does that powder people take to GAIN a few pounds in a big hurry count as a fad diet?
