It looks like there's a sponge-napping gang on the loose.
Giant inflatable SpongeBob SquarePants figures have been swiped from the roofs of Burger Kings in New York, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Maine, Tennesee and Utah. In some cases, a ransom note was left.
In a Minnesota town, police found a note that says, "we have SpongeBob" and demands "ten Crabby Patties, fries and milkshakes." It's signed by SpongeBob's nemesis, Plankton.
The ten-foot-tall yellow figure was also stolen from Burger Kings in Troy, Menands (muh-NANDS') and Glens Falls, New York. A note left in the drive-thru at the Troy shop says "We've got SpongeBob, and he will die if our demands are not met." But no demands are specified.
The fast-food giant is running a SpongeBob promotion in connection with the character's new movie.
Police in Troy admit that stealing SpongeBob may seem funny, but they say it's still a crime. They don't think the thefts at different locations are connected.
