View Full Version : Soda Pop
ChaoticThoughts 11-27-2004, 04:20 AM This is my one weakness. I can eat well, and get some excersize on the weekend... but 2-4 pops a day does add up.
Im trying to find alternatives. The nice thing about pop is that it comes in a can, is sheap, and has caffeine. But the sugar is the killer.
I have/do try to have tea instead. Which should work well with the colder weather. Any more ideas? Anyone else pretty much addicted to this stuff?
i use to drink a 2L bottle a night. i've cut back a lot.
I know it's bad stuff. The thing I object to, especially with kids but also with adults, is the size of the serving. 44 ouncers? - big enough for a family. Mondo sugar.
I buy the 8 ounce cans for road trips or picnics. I love a cold Dr. Pepper but I know it's all bad for ya.
BadNews88 11-29-2004, 05:13 PM You're on the right track with the switch to tea..many health benefits abound with that choice..free-radical fighting flavinoids at the top of the list.
You may find in re: soda pops, that the attraction is in the FIZZ (carbonation) of said product. A better alternative to the sodas, if you still want to have the fizzy taste in your life, is a sugar free seltzer water or PERRIER.
Other carbonated waters that are good are CALISTOGA, and H2Oh!
And if you are headquartered overseas, try the RAMLOSA from Sweden, or SPA from BeNeLux (Belgium made but sold in Holland & Lunembourg as well as in Belgium)
Very, VERY good!
tdipoet 11-30-2004, 12:29 PM i drink the slightly flavored carbonated waters... they're great. weaning off soda is the right choice, though.
colonel 11-30-2004, 10:38 PM I gave up pop (soda...whatever!) about a year ago and replaced it with a mix of club soda or water with a small amount of fruit juice. It's very refreshing and after a while, if you try a sip of Coke etc. you realize it tastes like crap.
Monster 11-30-2004, 10:43 PM i drink the slightly flavored carbonated waters... they're great. weaning off soda is the right choice, though.
That's what I was going to suggest. I rarely drink soda while I'm at school (I had a lot over Thanksgiving break simply because it's pretty much all that was available), but those carbonated flavoured waters are good. And pretty much devoid of all nutritional value (no sugar, no calories, no carbs).
Iron Sun 254 12-01-2004, 12:20 AM Doctor told me that the sugar in soda was literally tricking my body into getting fatter. I cut it out 3 weeks ago and lost almost 15 pounds.
Monster 12-01-2004, 12:43 AM Yeah, I cut soda down to one can a day, max, awhile back and dropped 5 lbs. in a week.
Baboon 12-01-2004, 09:05 AM This is my one weakness. I can eat well, and get some excersize on the weekend... but 2-4 pops a day does add up.
Holy crap! Yeah, that's a LOT of sugar and calories! Diet soda comes in cans too, you know. Plus, Diet Sprite goes well with Orange Stoli. :)
Water is pretty much all I drink.
Criminal 12-01-2004, 10:04 AM Try fruit juices or iced tea. I never liked soda myself. Even when I was a kid I hated soda. Now beer, thats another story. :hmm:
ChaoticThoughts 12-01-2004, 03:26 PM Diet soda comes in cans too, you know.
I do have tastebuds...
But I will try the fruit juice and carbonated stuff though.
I think I will have to adjust my alcohol intake as well, less rum and coke, more vodka and orange juice...
Monster 12-01-2004, 03:58 PM I do have tastebuds...
 Indeed.
I will NOT drink diet soda.
FallenAngel 12-01-2004, 04:45 PM I will NOT drink diet soda.
I think it's an acquired taste. I used to drink about 2 cans of soda a day. Now I drink one every couple of days and it's diet soda.
I got used to the taste. Now I like diet soda.
yup, diet is an acquired taste. after working with my father for all those yrs, diet tastes just as good.
Monster 12-01-2004, 04:54 PM I think it's an acquired taste.
I've heard that before.

Mikey555 12-02-2004, 07:14 PM I drink Dr. Pepper all day and night. I've been doing it for years and years. Other than one kidney stone, I haven't had any problems. I'm not even overweight. Although my teeth are rotting.
BadNews88 12-02-2004, 07:53 PM Although my teeth are rotting.
There's a LESSON to be LEARNED here, folks!
Corporate Avenger 12-03-2004, 08:33 AM I drtink this stuff known as water... :|

Since I live in a country where tap-water is rather polluted by chemicals used in breeding/farming, I follow the teachings of St Arnulf , bishop of Metz and Patron Saint of the brewers : Beware of impure water, Drink Ale instead ... :|

I don't trust anything you can see through...
Update on the soda intake: I have worked down to 1 a day. Dammit, I just think of an ice cold pepsi, and start tweeking. So, I should stop typing about ICE COLD PEPSI. It helps that I don't have any in the house. But I am going to the store later.
I think for sanitys sake, I will only have 1 can of pop with lunch at work, but that is all for the day. Once I ween myself a bit more, I will try finding juice or something else to pack with lunch. Its so much easier to find a 12-pack of pop than a 12-pack of decent juice. Go figure.

There's soon to be some things I'd like to discuss on that note: How difficult it is for low-income families to afford healthier meals.
Coming SOON to a theatre, OOP! We mean message board near YOU! :)
Stay TUNED!
eeper69 12-05-2004, 04:59 PM I don't drink soda at all. I drink tea, Gatorade, non-fat milk, natural spring water, or coffee.
BadNews88 12-05-2004, 05:16 PM In case you haven't looked:
The SUNDAY edition of YOUR local paper has a COUPON INSERT for the NEW 1-liter PLASTIC bottles of PERRIER Mineral Water! :nice:
I'm heading to my neighborhood ALBERTSON'S in about an hour to pick up some!

RightWingZealot 12-06-2004, 11:55 AM Im a total pepsi addict.
I know im an addict becuase of all the times I have quit drinking it.
:|
in fact.. I just broke my week and a half long fast from pepsi.. just about 10 minutes ago.
I know the stuff is horrible for me, but for some reason I cant stop drinking the crap.
I could stop eating alltogether I think, but I always have to have some sort of beverage in my hand.
I will drink a 6 pack in a day if ya let me. some day my heart is going to explode.
sometimes I lactate pepsi cola.

Not as tasty, but you get use to it.
BadNews88 12-06-2004, 01:23 PM Im a total pepsi addict.
This factoid is SELF-EVIDENT from the OHER musings that you have made..
I know the stuff is horrible for me..
Admitting there's a problem is the FIRST STEP towards RECOVERY! :)
I could stop eating alltogether I think, but I always have to have some sort of beverage in my hand.
If you HAVE to drink to be "social", that's NOT "social drinking"..
And this "stop eating altogether" thing....the damage in the long run.... :(
I will drink a 6 pack in a day if ya let me.
By today's standards, a 6 pack in one day is .... quite conservative.... :|
sometimes I lactate pepsi cola.
Makes for a FRIGHTENING mental picture. :eek3: (See reference to "Self-Evident")
anyone wanna taste?
Uh, no thanks.. :P
But where's "h2g2fan"?? Ya MIGHT wanna page THEM! :p

VERY Timely Public Service Announcement
SecretSamadhi 12-06-2004, 02:37 PM Diet is nasty, I'm a Pepsi girl. Although too much soda definitely keeps on the pounds. I try to drink at least 4 12oz. bottles of water a day.
Orange Juice is what kills me, so many calories and carbs! But its nectar to my body...
BadNews88 12-06-2004, 02:49 PM Orange Juice is what kills me, so many calories and carbs! But its nectar to my body...
Orange Juice is SO FINE..
Orange Juice is TOTALLY DIVINE..
Orange Juice in the morning EVERY DAY..
Any other juice to start with, just NO WAY..
(An' ya get yer Vitamin C, there, too, effendi..)
But FIRST & FOREMOST .. it TASTES GOOD!
Jargonic 01-27-2005, 06:00 AM I used to drink at least two 64-ouncers a day from the local gas station's soda fountain. I reformed, though, when I ballooned into this horridly obese body, and now I drink only about 1 64 ounce diet pop a day.
Diet is the way to go for die-hard soda-jerkers, IMHO. You get the carbonation without the calories, and you fool your taste buds into thinking they're getting something substantial. What they don't know.... :D
smalltown_honey 01-27-2005, 11:11 AM I dont care much for the diet drinks either but I have to admit im a die hard dr. pepper fan....I have to have one every morning first thing or im a total B*tch to be around...but after that initial one I drink water or tea the rest of the day.
Manstein 01-30-2005, 01:49 PM Controlling what you consume is a very difficult thing to do, there is no question there. If it was easy, everyone would be doing it.
There really isnt anything beneficial from drinking Soda throughout the day (other than the temporal taste). If you drink it instead of milk, you are at a higher risk of osteoporosis, and fragile bones. It also reaks havoc on your teeth, causing unwanted tooth decay. It is LOADED with sugar and calories. If you consume too much caffeine throughout the day, it will also increase your chances of getting a kidney stone ten fold. My dad had a kidney stone a few months ago, trust me, you do NOT want to get one of those. It's a painful experience when your bladder tries to push a grain of sand like stone through your ureter (very thin vein).
For those of you who overweight, you would be surprised how much weight you can lose in a short period of time just by manipulating your diet. Toss the Soda, even diet soda (1 can a day at the most if you absolutely need it), and drink roughly 6-10 glasses of water throughout the day. Skim milk is also very good for you. Combine it with excersise and you are on your way to a great lifestyle change.
BadNews88 01-30-2005, 05:16 PM And THAT is TELLING it like it REALLY is!! :nice:
NaturalTruth 05-24-2005, 04:37 PM I drink Dr. Pepper all day and night. I've been doing it for years and years. Other than one kidney stone, I haven't had any problems. I'm not even overweight. Although my teeth are rotting.
Now I hate to plug a product on a forum. In fact it may be against the rules,(If so, please ask me to edit) but I like Reed's Extra Ginger Beer. It has a very spicy flavor with very little sugar, satisfys the soda/beer craving, & has 25g ground ginger in every bottle, which is really very healthy to the system.
So when I'm home watching a movie in the evening, I'm drinking ginger beer & eating raw carrots, roasted nuts, & dried fruits. You might be surprised at how good this tastes, and it SO much healthier than stuffing your gut with doughnuts, beer, cheetos, & martinis. :nice:

Alrighty then....can I have your beer and cheetos? :p

Sounds like a "lite" version of my husband. He does drink diet, minimum of 2 64-oz a day after work, who knows what he drinks during work. He used to do 4-6 a day, and had to cut back when the doc said he was poisoning himself with caffiene. He will choose caffiene-free diet coke but only if it's on tap, which is rare, he won't drink any diet soda out of cans or bottles.
I was a pepsi girl my whole life, I grew up on pepsi with dinner, especially at granny's house. I love dinner at granny's house. Seared steak, sticky rice, and salad was the standard fare. With a nice glass of pepsi. But they were very small glasses, maybe 6 ounces including ice. And I never had more than 1 or 2.
The strange thing is I switched to a Coke preference after all those years. Then I stopped drinking it all together.
Exander 06-25-2005, 07:07 AM No thanks... i can't imagine a day not drinking a caffinated, carbonated, soda.... I love Mountain Dew altho its uber nasty to your sperm count.... >.> my sister knows someone who got sterile from drinking it to much.... *shudders* but Sprite is also good and so is Coca-cola ^^ Gotta love Lime. Pepsi itself is just NASTY i try to stay away from Pepsi....they keep trying to copy off Coke and they SUCK at it... not only that in the north we don't get Mountain Dew Live Wire and they murdered Pepsi Blue wich i miss horribly..... /cry Water isent my cup of tea cause it makes me run to the bathroom to much.......
