How you all doin
:p
in Snouter's absence we've decided to do Deep Purple's Smoke on the Water.

if i recall (without digging out the album)..they wrote the song after a fireworks display caused a fire at the hotel they were staying at in Switzerland and record the song on the mobile unit the Stones built..that they conveniently had with them :D

Deep Purple

Smoke On The Water

We all came out to Mummos
On the Lake Geneva shoreline
To make records with a mobile
We didn't have much time
Frank Zappa and the Mothers
Were at the best place around
But some stupid with a flare gun
Burned the place to the ground
Smoke on the water, fire in the sky

They burned down the gambling house
It died with an awful sound
Funky & Claude was running in and out
Pulling kids out the ground
When it all was over
We had to find another place
But Swiss time was running out
It seemed that we would lose the race
Smoke on the water, fire in the sky

We ended up at the Grand Hotel
It was empty, cold and bare
But with the Rolling truck Stones thing just outside
Making our music there
With a few red lights and a few old beds
We made a place to sweat
No matter what we get out of this
I know we'll never forget
Smoke on the water, fire in the sky

Redline, well done! your sync issues seem to be resolved now; a good interpretation.
I haven't even started mine yet... :(

thanks, Mike. i found a way to slide the individual waves...something i was hoping to avoid....still sounds like a group of 12 year old in the garage...but eh...there's no way i could build the song around the guitar. i might re-do the intro and replace the funky keyboard. i might also step into a sink hole tomorrow..who knows :D

I started the sequencing two weeks ago, but haven't had the opportunity to actually finish or start putting down tracks on it.

Life's been busy.:(

Welcome back Mike. It sounds like you doing corporate or tax accounting stuff.

oki, the lyrics have a typo. The first line refers to Montreux, the famous Swiss city.

I'll see if I've got some time this weekend, life's been busy as of late. My limited music time has been devoted to remixing my old and stale stuff.

Take your time n'ga. I will see if I can come up with a couple of new combats in the meantime.

RedLine: Nice job on this monster of a song.

oki: I like the aggressive vocal approach and adapting it to a modern style.

By the way, in case anyone is interested, I recall reading an interview with Richie Blackmore and technically speaking the two string main riff was originally supposed to be plucked rather than strummed to achieve a snappier effect.

Are you guys ready to tackle Led Zeppelin's Over The Hills And Far Away?

Snouter
01-23-2005, 06:08 PM
Okay, keep in mind that one will come up sometime, so practice that intro riff until you can get it down without thinking about it.

Meanwhile check out the 1972 classic Hold Your Head Up by Argent.

God Gave Rock And Roll To You is another fun one, but how about we go through with this easy, fun number that is open to a lot of improv. Rod Argent formally of the Zombies came up with this little gem back in 1972 and it was among the most requested songs at the time.

Hold Your Head Up by Argent

I am coming up with a tempo of 87.7 at 4/4

Someone had tabbed this out and it seems correct. The sliding D shape on the chorus makes it really simple.

Main Guitar Riff

e|-------5---5---5---5-----|----3---3---3---3----|
B|-------8---8---8---7-----|----5---5---5---3----|
G|-------7---7---7---7-----|----5---5---5---5----|
A|-------------------------|---------------------|
D|-------------------------|---------------------|
E|-------------------------|---------------------|

And if it's bad
don't let them get you down
You can take it.

And if it hurts
don't let them see you cry
You can make it

Hold your head up,oh
hold your head up, oh
hold your head up, oh
Hold your head high

Hold your head up, oh
hold your head up, oh
hold your head up, oh
Hold your head high

And if they stare
Just let them burn their eyes on you moving

And if they shout
Don't let it change a thing that you're doing

Hold your head up,oh
hold your head up, oh
hold your head up, oh
Hold your head high

Hold your head up, oh
hold your head up, oh
hold your head up, oh
Hold your head high

(Solo + Keyboard or whatever you want)

Hold your head up (starts on 3rd measure of solo and repeats until verse)

And if they stare
Just let them burn their eyes on you moving

And if they shout
Don't let it change a thing that you're doing

Hold your head up,oh
hold your head up, oh
hold your head up, oh
Hold your head high

(Fade out)
