I needed a tuneup on my car and the place I go to was having a special for a tune up on a v6 for $49.99, so I went to get it done and the guy said since I have a "transverse V6" it would actually cost $89.99 because they would have to move the engine to get behind it or something like that. What the hell is a transverse engine?
I'm also a little bummed because I needed new tires, they were also having a special on that, 2 tires, 15 inch for $49, but the guy said I couldn't get those because of the suspension on my car, so I'm paying $123 instead (he said those were the cheapest).
So instead of the $125 I was planning on spending for a tune up, oil change and new front tires I'm spending $240. Damn my car is expensive to keep up

He took you for a stupid woman who knows nothing about cars and jacked up the prices.
He may have been telling the truth about the engine. I've never heard of a transverse engine, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Some engines you practically have to disassemble to get at the plugs. If you have less than 100,000 miles on your car you don't need new plugs. Hell, a buddy of mine changed his plugs and wires on a Ford Ranger at 256,000 miles.
He straight up lied about the tire thing. As long as the tire size specified by the manufacturer is the same it doesn't matter what brand you get. Suspension has nothing to do with it, unless you're talking performance (like a Vette or Mustang). A 185 75 15 Hankook will work just as well as a 185 75 15 Goodyear, for half the price.
You got screwed. Go somewhere else next time because that dude's dishonest. Don't go there at all if you haven't spent the money yet.

your engine sits sideways.
He is full of chit. A tune-up is usually the biggest rip off and they do little more then LOOK at stuff and maybe change plugs.
your engine sits sideways.
yup, transverse engines = engine sits sideways; i.e. most FWD vehicles.
what kind of car is it?

Yeah, it sounds like you're being reamed. I absolutely loathe taking my car to a mechanic - that's why I try and do everything myself when possible.

it's a 1992 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Royale.
He said the price for the tuneup would be higher because they had to move the engine to get at the plugs.
I wish I could do this stuff by myself instead of trying to find a garage that doesn't want to have butt sex with me, but I don't know how! Maybe it's just time to invest in a good manual and try to teach myself this stuff.

Gals who aren't afraid to get their hands dirty under the hood of a car are sexy! :nice:

Yeah.. sounds like he scammed you.
if i can get to the plugs on my '93 Caddy Deville w/ the 4.9L anchor in it, they can get to the plugs on a '92 Delta 88. :p

Buy a Haynes manual for your car at a local auto parts store for about $15. It has a detailed description on how to do stuff, as well as pictures to look at. You can read up on something and determine whether or not you want to attempt it. You can also buy a basic tool set pretty cheap there, or have friends and family buy them for you as gifts (birthday, Christmas, etc.). You'll be able to do the basic stuff on your own then.
