View Full Version : Long Live France!
themistocles 11-21-2004, 07:06 AM While I may be a right winger American who ostensibly loathes France, I have decided that no other nation on Earth has a more fascinating history than France. Let us discuss the trials, the tribulations, the triumphs, the shortcomings, the glory that is France.
Discuss!

Von Apfelstrudel 11-21-2004, 07:16 AM Nice pic ...
wonder what would have become of the French political post WWI spectrum had he not been assassinated ...
Wonder if he had made "l'union sacree" with the others had WWI broken out despite his wishes too
themistocles 11-21-2004, 07:30 AM Well, I always thought or had heard that Leon Blum essentially carried on Jaures' work and fought to prevent France from becoming "Guesdist". And since Blum is such a large figure of that day, I guess we can say he was successful? You, obviously, are in a better position to analyse than me. :D
Von Apfelstrudel 11-21-2004, 11:08 AM Well, not that much a better position actually .
I don't knwo much about Jaures, and his stance in the socialist international .
About blum, a little much (history teacher made us read a whole book on the entre deux guerres period _ ie the so called "republique radicale", since it was dominated by this center party which made and unmade majorities as it switched sides _ back in high school as a topic to the essay that would be the criterium as to which students he'd send to the concour general _ a honorary competition opposing high schoolers in the whole country since ... pffft .. Napoleon ?)

err, where's the rest of the sentence gone ?
Shelter 11-25-2004, 03:19 AM err, where's the rest of the sentence gone ?
no where, that is a normal sentence for dorag. :) Maxim magazine had a hilarious article making fun of France ( if you arent familiar with them, they are a funny mag and make fun of everyone, USA included) that had this timeline of French wars that was hilarious. THe comments they came up with were incredible..:D I personally am for anything making fun of anything, so long as it is done in the spirit of fun, and not maliciously. They had this great thing in it though about how, the only war the French ever " really" won was the French revolution, and that was only because they were fighting fellow Frenchmen, and the outcome was decided by which side had more supporters, because it took them longer to surrender..:D
France is a beautiful country, gotta like the food, and the art. Never have been fond of the automobiles though
dorag 11-25-2004, 08:24 PM err, where's the rest of the sentence gone ?

first degaulle retreated with a pretty good force and germans got france (equal number of tanks, artillery, infantry. good suply of ammunition, barbed wire, and explosives)
then, he established the "govt in exile in London"
then, the canadians tried to invade at Ypes and catastrophicaly failed
then, the us/uk/canada/austrialia planned a grandious invasion with massive air, naval, infantry forces to get france to help ease the pressure from USSR
then, because the force was designed that if the invasion failed they still had plenty of men/supplies to try again, usa had to badly cut back on the pacific front
then, they had to get even more forces for a posibble operation dragon if sea lord failed
then, AEF got the beachheads with numerious casualties. later got to paris. but the free french got the honor of liberating it instead of the usa.
the, we did this to get degaulle's ass back in office.
then, the french massive student demonstrators kicked him out in a humiliating cout d'estat
then he came back, got kicked out again, started behaving like a baby and then he got kicked again.
so this is the comprehensive story for you.
:)
themistocles 01-24-2005, 05:10 AM Lately, I've been reading up on the events of 1830, particularly in Poland and France, and I'd like to dust off this topic.
Von Ap, or anyone else from France...what do they typically teach you in grade school/high school of 1830?

In my memory, not a whole lot. Or maybe I wasn't paying attention...
It seems to me that they kind of gloss over the period after the post-revolution phase, and kick in again with Napoleon.
J'ai plein de choses a dire sur la France, mais je ne sais pas si ca rentrerait dans le cadre de cette discussion... alors je m'efface.

CrazyHorse 01-24-2005, 11:55 PM I never figured out why Algerians,Moroccans, and Tunisians fought for France in Italy.

Actually the British nobility and ruling class is French in origin. In 1066 William the Bastard (his real title, I am not making this up) or William the conquerer as modern historians more kindly refer to him took a gang of bloodthirsty French knights. They defeated King Harold in battle. Took his crown. Stold land from the Saxons, raped their women, drank their ale, enslaved all the people and made themselves lords. To this day the british working class are Saxon and the Normans still run things.
Of course a lot of time has passed and for a while Cromwell and the Parlementarians did get their revenge but the Royalist Rule continued not long after it. :hmm:

can't remember much, it must have been a period studied in the end of a year, and history teachers are notoriously trailing behind with the programm , and nver complete it...

Exactly. The Saxon peasants supplied cows for the Norman Lord's table and the Norman dined on Beef.
It should be noted that virtually all obscenities in the English language of Anglo-Saxon origin.
