The problem is exercising, but to a lesser extent. The big problem is our fast food nation. Its serving size. Its grease. Its eating out. Its our fast food life style. Its how we eat, what we eat, and how much of it. If we all had balanced diets, with balanced meals, we may be out of shape, but not morbidly obeese.

It's our system. Plentiful supply for a species built on scavenging for sparse amounts.
Lack of adversity.
My mother grew up in wartime. As a little girl in South Korea she knew starvation. Her house in California today has enough supplies to feed an army twice over. I think at some point in her life she decided that noone would ever starve again. Dad used to poke fun at her for packing away stuff so much.
I think Justin has a point. We've got convenience up the wazoo but it's not doing us any good.

I think we're seeing the same thing, only from opposite sides. I say too much plenty, you say lack of adversity. Same coin.:)

Too much refined munch, too little bouncing around. Its that easy before the metabolic syndrome changes it all. Its pretty hard to do something about a high insulinelevel and low muscular tollerance for it.
And yes, the problem with our lifestyles is about psychology. Our mentality is to secure the supply jojo mentioned and the faster access to it (less effort)the stronger dependant you develope, meaning sugar, fat, drugs or alcohol.
We know how to do but we dont want to do it. The growing-old population of Scandinavia that have experienced wartime diet - based on root vegetables and milk (yes, Scans are not lactose-int, exept Finns) without addictive nicotine and coffeine - simply doesnt know how to die... Their way of life, dictated by necessity and scarcity, showed to be healthy, BUT they would never choose that life consciously. Nor would you...

If we had different fast food it would be better. You can go to a deli and get a fresh (and healthy) sandwich just as fast as going to McDonalds, but deli's are harder to find, fastfood joints are on every corner. If there was a deli right next to a Burger King I'd pick the deli 9 times out of 10.
