It is something that, in MANY ways, and for MANY people, is a LONG TIME COMING! (Link Courtesy KNBC, TV-4, Los Angeles) (http://www.nbc4.tv/education/3925453/detail.html)

I personally think it'll help strengthen a person's identity.....by their NOT having to DENY any part of their PAENTAL HERITAGE..

It REALLy is the RIGHT thing to DO!

Yes, it is better that they offer a multi-racial category so somebody doesn't have to choose one racial heritage over another.

That said, I'd rather they not ask for somebody's racial category PERIOD. All they are doing is trying to divide by race and it opens up clear powers to discriminate against people with unpreferential backgrounds. We'll never heal the racial divide by asking such questions.

Amen to that ...
What has this question to do with uni application anyway ? (unless there's some lousy affirmative action behind that somewhere ...)
Harder to collect data on minorities ? Now, sure, but I guess those forms are not filled by the students so that they could help socio thesis to be completed ...
Sociologists can make their own bloody research an poll unaided ffs ...

I'm obviously not the first person to agree with this. Precisely my thought on the issue.

What defines Multiracial? German and Irish?

Everytime I am presented with a series of boxes with which to categorize my race on a form, I usually check "other" and if possible write in "human."

...and more often than not, I end up filling it out a second time, "correctly."

I also detest the race box. I never answer it, or I choose "other" or deliberately answer wrong. I'm half-sicilian so I suppose I have a little of everything in me anyways, if you go back far enough.

Race doesn't even exist except as a nebulous and debatable concept.

Yeah, I mean the Brazilian Military Government thought the same thing :|

I thought that it maybe DID in ONE context at least:

The HUMAN race..
