As Senator Hillary Clinton maneuvers for a possible run for the White House in 2008, Republicans are floating two big names to challenge her for her current position in 2006: former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani and retiring Secretary of State Colin Powell.

In an interview for NY1’s “Inside City Hall” on Tuesday, Stephen Minarik, who was selected as the new chairman of the state GOP this week, said Giuliani would be a formidable match for the Democratic incumbent.

“No one, not even the harshest and partisan of Democrats can say that New York City is not in better shape under Republican guidance,” said Minarik. “I think Rudy Giuliani is someone considered not only on the national front but also on our the state front. I would love to have him as a candidate for us statewide.”

In response, Giuliani said he is "committed to enhancing the Republican Party throughout the state."

Giuliani initially ran against Clinton for the Senate seat in 2000 but dropped out to receive treatment for prostate cancer. The popular New York politicians are both thought to be considering running for the White House in 2008.

If that ever happens then I hope the south tries to sucede, but if not I'm headed to Iceland and renouncing my U.S. citizenship, which, I really never wanted anyway.

Didn't Giuliani jump on the troops when he blamed the missing 400 tons of explosives on them? Smooth move Exlax :nice:

Didn't Powell flip-flop heavily from his 2001 position on Iraq's WMD status only to be made to look like an idiot in front of the world as he touted weather ballon inflation trailers as WMDs?

As bad as Billary might be, she's probably not got alot to fear from these two.

I wish the Giuliani loving media would cover what he did to his wife, then the savage might not get much support from women..

Yea, we all know how you feel about Giuliani. Im sure your opinion of him would be the same if he didnt divorce his wife.

The media hated Giuliani before 9/11 even happened. You bought into it. Only after 9/11 happened Giuliani was loved by the media.

Yea, and we know how you feel about the disgusting person.

I don't worship corrupt politicians just because they cleaned the streets up and made the trains run on time..

Im sure your opinion of him would be the same if he didnt divorce his wife.

There's a lot more to it than that, but violating peoples rights and supporting a police state and murderous cops does the trick.

It's amazing how people love this guy just like the people that love Clinton or Bush and think they can do no wrong. Rudy Giuliani is super-human, he cannot do wrong..

The media hated Giuliani before 9/11 even happened.

ROFL

He's always been a media darling, heaped with praise and treated like a saint since 9-11.

You bought into it.

The ony person who's bought into anything is the media created God status of Giuliani that you vehemently defend.

Only after 9/11 happened Giuliani was loved by the media.

He was praised long before for "cleaning up" NYC.

Its obvious that I dont worship any corrupt politicans. Alot of people here are greatful that Giuliani cleaned up the streets of NY. At least he was willing to try unlike the mayors who preceeded him.

There's a lot more to it than that, but violating peoples rights and supporting a police state and murderous cops does the trick.

How did he violate peoples rights? Any mayor has to support his police force. If the cops dont have his support, than they cant do their jobs. It will only make their jobs harder than it already is. But we all know how you feel about the police.

I also want to add (before you accuse me of supporting "muderous cops")that I do not condone what any of those cops did to Amadou Diallo and Abner Louima. It was beyond wrong what those cops did.

He's always been a media darling, heaped with praise and treated like a saint since 9-11.

That is absolute horse****. Alot of people hated him with a passion here, including the media. People only realized he was a decent mayor after his second term was over.

The ony person who's bought into anything is the media created God status of Giuliani that you vehemently defend.

I like the guy but I dont treat him like a god like you imply.

He was praised long before for "cleaning up" NYC.

No, he wasnt. Which proves to me you are woefully ignorant of what has gone on here.

This is all you can come up with? If what he did was so terrible, why isnt there more stories about it?

The only thing significant I remember about him was his heavy handed ability to confiscate (keep forever) cars of those people with misdemeanor traffic offenses. I don't want him as president. And by the way, how did he do down in Mexico giving advice to those 3rd world **** heads in Mexico City?

Riz,
I remember going into Manhattan when Dinkins was mayor. I remember the place being dirty and being afraid to even go to Times Square at night. Then I joined the army and wasn't in NYC for a few years. When I went back and saw what it was like due to the effect Giuliani had on the city, it was like night and day. I know that the media hated him before 9/11 because even though I was gone I still tried to keep up on local news while I was gone. For CA to claim that he was always a media darling just shows how completely assinine he can be. The media HATED him. They gave him absolutely no mercy during the Diallo incident and by listening to them you would think that he was the one who committed the act. But you're right, he was absolutely right for standing behind the cops. After all, isn't that the way it's supposed to be in this country? Innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. So there is nothing wrong with standing behind a city police officer before he was convicted of anything. CA just can't stand Giuliani for the simple little fact that when he is on TV or when his name is printed in the paper that there is a little 'R' next to his name. I doubt CA has ever lived in NYC and I highly doubt he has ever worked there to see how things were and compare them to how they are, but then personal bias can be powerful thing.

That would be a powerful ticket. If we must have a repub prez again, then let it be a pro-choice one.

I remember going to the Jacob Javitz center for the Car show a long time ago (at least 11-12 years ago)and seeing hookers on every corner. I remember Times Square being a very, very seedy place full of porn stores and garbage strewn all over the ground. Crime rates (murder/rape/muggings) were through the roof. I remember someone from Utah getting murdered in the subway after leaving the US Open. Alot of **** went down while Mayor Koch and Dinkins was the mayor (remember Crown Heights? The Central Park Rape ring a bell?). They really didnt want to take on crime head on. And it showed.

Since Giuliani took over as Mayor, NYC has become the safest big city in the US. Murder rates are down considerably. Rapes are down considerably. Businesses started coming back into NYC. Movies were being filmed in NYC again. People are moving back into the city, reversing a 30+ year trend. Giuliani did what was right, it had to be done. People didnt like him because it wasnt the popular thing to do.

CA has admitted that he has never even set foot in NY or NYC but yet, he is quick to ridicule Giuliani for taking vendors off the streets (not knowing how crowded the streets are during the day and how it takes buisness away from store owners). Myself and Red have been arguing with him for quite some time now over this. He will never get it.

You're right. I remember Koch, Dinkins, the Central Park Rapist, Crown Heights, all of it. Someone would have to be completely blind or dumb to see NYC today and not say that Giuliani made it a MUCH better place than it was in the 80s. :nice:

Incidentally, how is it with Bloomberg as the mayor? I've been back in NY for a total of about 2 weeks in the past few years and have heard mostly negative stuff about him in the media. Since it was the same way for Rudy before 9/11 and since I almost no trust in the media at all when it comes to things like this I was wondering if he really does suck or if it's just exaggerations.

I didn't know alot about Giuliana, but I had always thought he wasn't liked. Then 9/11 happened and it seemed everyone loved him. I was always (still am) confused about this guy

Other than raising taxes across the board and being a totall asswipe, hes done a semi-decent job. Crime continues to drop and people continue to move back into Manhattan and Brooklyn. Hes also pushing for the 2012 Olympics and he also wants to build the NY Jets a brand new stadium on the West side of manhattan over the LIRR railyard. The people compliained about him and disliked him after he raised the taxes (the city was billions of dollars in debt). He only did it to bring the city back into the black. After everything was all said and done, people started warming up to him.
