View Full Version : Muzzleloader season
92Notch 10-24-2004, 12:07 PM So MD muzzleloader season started on Thursday (10/21).... I went hunting Thurs-Sat. .... Got a good sized doe yesterday just before dusk, didn't make a great shot (open sights, and I tend to aim to far back from the front sholder .... I'm going to have to start aiming at the sholder and taking the loose of some meat) and ended up haveing to track her for about 30minutes and a 100 yards through some thick underbrush.... but we (my dad and I) found her :nice: .... so tomorow the real work begins when I skin and butcher her.
92Notch 10-26-2004, 08:09 PM congrats Notch. :nice:
Thanks!
Have you made it out hunting at all this year yet? .... this was my first time out this year.... I like being out in the woods even if I pass on taking one (if I see one), wish I could go out there more.
Myrddin 10-26-2004, 08:23 PM Muzzleloader? I thought only breechloading rifles were made now.

There are tons of "modern" muzzleloaders! ....
I have one of these; it's a side lock percussion (not as modern as the in-lines)
http://www.traditionsfirearms.com/eshop/10Expand.asp?ProductCode=R36808150
(mine is an older one ..... the hammer and lock plate are nickel plated too (all the metal is silver in color on mine) everything else is the same.)
The more modern ones are "in-lines", Thompson Center, Winchester, Remington, Knight, CVA (I'm not a fan of CVA's), etc.... make them (there's allot of different manufactures) ..... I've been looking for a replacement for mine.... I'm having problems loading it (I have to pound the bullets down with a piece of 2x4.... I cleaned it out real well two weeks ago.... next time I go to the range I'll see if it's fixed.... I had to use my dad's TC New Englander to take my deer this weekend)... I'd probably go w/ this one (the black stainless) (http://www.winchestermuzzleloading.com/products/apex.htm) if I need to replace mine (I found it allot cheaper then the prices listed).
I enjoy shooting muzzleloaders .... a whole bunch! :)
Myrddin 10-27-2004, 12:09 AM So this is a kind of retro version of hunting? Does it use musket balls or does it somehow use bullets? Do you dress up in buckskins too? ;)
Actually it probably is more fair on the deer than normal hunting with a more modern design of gun so I would approve of it more (venison tastes nice also ;)).

we need a few tactical nukes to take care of the deer problem around here :P
Actually next year they plan on hiring sharpshooters to "take care" of the problem by taking out a few hundred/month

Pleanty of projectile choices availible dozens of manafuctures of bullets (hornady (https://www.hornady.com/shop/?page=shop/browse&category_id=869f8d5ade1f95a56926ea240650f13c&ps_session=a596716d4ce115dbb0488f8adda0eb75) is one of them, make a selection at the top if you want to look at what they offer) most of the inlines will have a rate of twist in the rifling making sabots optimal for them. Mine 1:48" twist is probably better for conicals or patched round ball even though "they" say sabots will work. .... I use conicals in mine (385gr buffalo bullets to be exact .... from the buffalo bullet company, can't find a website to link for ya)
nope, no buckskins.... nobody I know wears them.
to me .... "more fair" is taking down the animal as quickly as possible.... so it does not have to suffer. There's allot of factors in "efficient" killing, delivering the projectile as accuratly as possible and the amount of energy delivered to the target (varies depending on the rifle/bullet/etc) being most important IMO.

ha! you think you have it bad, visit Jersey. :p
92Notch 10-27-2004, 08:51 PM hey .... if you got some land for me to hunt I'll try to help the situation best I can. Bow, shotgun, muzzleloader, or rifle .... I've got the MD state qualification for all of them (necessary to hunt certain lands) :)
Thanks!

I didn't see any Bull elk this year, except for the usual ones walking the city streets. Smart animals they are. Quite a few cows. I hunted GMU 18 next to Rocky Mountain National Park. Fourth season is coming up, and if it starts to really snow hard, I'm thinking about getting a leftover tag just for meat. The bull tag is good all year, but you're limited to one, which is cool for me - all I ever wanted was one!
I got skunked on the deer draw this year, so I took the preference point.
November 15 - Aberts Squirrel are in season. I'll be in the woods looking for rabbit and fox squirrel too. The boys love this stuff. If we can find a good jet black Aberts we'll mount it.

Damn .... you have to draw for deer? .... our limit is ten per season (Bow, muzzleloader, Rifle) per licensed hunter .... no draw or anything.... but we got "city" creaping up everywhere, that's probably why.
.... Good luck and be safe when you go out! :nice: Hope you get a nice Bull.... you could always go to a hunt... but damn, that's expensive!
Don't know what an Alberts Squirrel is, but we got fox squirrel's all over the damn place ... counted 12 in my filed of view at one time whaile in the stand over the weekend. :) (I should start taking an air gun out with me :) )
