View Full Version : Suggestion for DA's wellbeing: limit number of members

At present there are 333 members on DA, not counting those who have never posted anything. At present, there is a healthy atmosphere of debate on DA, but it has been widely noticed that enmity is on the rise.

Perhaps we should limit the no. of posting members to four hundred, and see how the place proceeds from there? If four hundred works OK, we try 450, then 500 etc.

How about it?

And I suppose you’re anti immigration also? Such unadulterated selfishness, you must be a capitalist for sure. Who will be the INS of DiscussAnything?

I kinda think the admins want the site to grow, more quality than quanity... but I am sure if it gets bad, changes will be made

Well, I don't think we'd ever activley supress registration and participation, that seems against the ideas I had when creating the site.

what we will however do it demand quality, demand diversity (as much as possible) and try to keep the site a 'quality' site and not a quantity site. I must say, I do get excited when i see we had a 'busy' day...but I can get discouraged when I feel a lot of those are 'worthless posts.'

I think aside from limiting participation, everyone, members, admins, staff, etc, should look to continaully improve the level and quality fo discussion and try bringing new ideas and elements to the table.

yeah, i don't think the main concern is the number of people. I mean, there's a lot of good ones we may deny access if we do that. It's more about how it's run. Right now it's a pretty good feel, this forum, and if people join and do not adapt to how things go here, they will be corrected (aka Silverhawk). If they continue to be a problem, they will get booted at some point. It also has a lot to do with our current memberbase though. If people start slacking (RR and TJ) and postwhoring and just dragging this site to a lower level of quality, and new signups continue this, we would go down the drain. So everyone, please keep up the good work and keep this place blossoming like it has.

Thats how I see it.

Quality of posts?????? OK, I admit my posts are oftentimes not exactly filled with wisdom, but they are almost limited to the Lounge, Whine Box, and my personal space. I take offense to that. I consider myself a serious poster when the mood strikes, or when I find an interesting topic in any of the other forums. I was once a heavy poster in the political forums, but gave that up cuz it was just too biased on both left and right, in my opinion. And you're going to go and point the finger at me and cyber just cuz of a couple of days of having fun? And the second day was very arguably not postwhoring. And another thing, Mr. Admin. If you feel this way, just PM me. When Shadow (not silver) left the site, wasn't one of the major concerns was how issues were not brought up properly and addressed to the right people OFF of this site. So why are you going to go and bitch at me on this forum before coming to me and telling me to fix my attitude?

Mike, I didnt mean to offend you and do value you as a member, but I was specifically talking about the postwhore threads lately. There's a been a couple of times where I had to explicitely tell you guys to knock it off. Other than that I have no beef with you, aight? Its the postwhoring stuff that gives new peeps the wrong impressions and from there on it's just not gonna go uphill yknow?

Fair enough. It was only an idea if you needed a last resort, and I don't think we're very near that stage.

Yeah, you did have to stop me a couple of times, but really. The first time, yeah, that wasn't cool, I don't care that you stopped it. But when me and cyber went to my journal? I don't see how that was truly negative to anyone. Basically, we just told redfield that he'd be surprised at the number of posts we could throw up, and he didn't really believe us. So we showed him. And hell, we're having a little fun with the site, ya know?

I am a (relatively speaking) new member to DA. I have learned more on the art of postwhoring here than any other board I've known or been a part of and I thank RR and TJ for that. That being said, I could see how postwhoring with "worthless posts" would set a "bad example" for some of the other members.

Ever since that day in RR's personal space, I've vowed on my "I Am Spock" (that was the book nearest to me) that I would not use my new found power for evil. I've made an honest effort to incorporate my wisdom into the majority of my posts so new members would see that a nut like myself can be a nut and still respect the site, its admins, and the members who share this space. So let it be said, so let it be done.

How was that? Pretty cool, huh?:)

PW is bad because it wastes bandwidth.

This board is based on quality, not quantity

That is why we all have MSN/AOL/ICQ
