View Full Version : Olymipic Officiating
Snouter 08-25-2004, 03:35 PM It seems like a lot of easy calls are screwed up by these morons.
In what I heard, some US gymnast was getting inflated scores. From what I saw, an Eqyptian boxer was getting his ass kicked but some deriviative of a Russian and because the Egyptian caught him with an elbow that opened him up, the idiot ref stopped the fight. In the Australia vs. Cuba gold medal baseball, an Australian hit a 400 footer that hit the centerfield wall with 2 men on. The moronic ump called it an out because the Cuban managed to catch it after the ball bounced off the wall.
The announcers called it "creative officiating."
igofast 08-25-2004, 03:46 PM why do you care about who wins the olympics?
Gibson 08-25-2004, 04:04 PM Why wouldn't he care?
igofast 08-25-2004, 04:10 PM Because it doesn't matter?
Gibson 08-25-2004, 04:19 PM Because it doesn't matter?
Pride of where you come from certainly does matter. If it didn't why do sports exist at ALL? Why do I cheer for the browns even though we suck, why does axoangelq root for the cubs? it certainly does matter :nice:
igofast 08-25-2004, 04:29 PM Gib - I don't give a **** about the olympics. It's just how I feel. I asked why he cared? Whatever his answer, that's just how he feels. That's all there is to it.

I'm almost certain that the "moronic" ump called it correctly. The ball is live and fair (provided it's not foul obviously) until it either leaves the park or hits the ground.

In baseball or softball, if the ball bounces off anything and someone catches it, it isn't an out. Since it bounced back in play, it's still live, yeah, but it's not reason for an out.
There's never going to be any type of game where someone totally agrees with the officiating.

Right but when we I asked you why he wouldn't care you said "it doesn't matter" like it doesn't matter to anyone at all. sure as heck matters to the olympians and a whole bunch of people in this country and all around the world. What you think for yourself is fine, but saying that he shouldn't care because it doesn't matter is rather rude :hmm:
But either way, I have noticed many many many BS calls during these olympics. Most notably in men's gymnastics.
And FYI, the wall counts as the ground when dealing with balls in play.
h2g2Fan 08-25-2004, 04:34 PM All events with subjective judging should be removed from the Olympics and international competition.
This includes, but is not limited to: gymnastics, diving, synchronized swimming, and figure skating.

I suppose I should have said (to me) for clarity's sake. It clearly means something to people as NBC has incredible ratings, but I don't understand why and can't relate. That's all I was saying.

I tend to agree with H2G2.

I suppose you're right. I could have sworn a ball caught before hitting the ground was an out no matter what, but I can't find it in the rules, I'm not an umpire, and you seem to know. Oh well.
h2g2Fan 08-25-2004, 04:49 PM Ski jump is the only pure event. It is the one event where steroids / other banned substances cannot significantly improve one's performance.
Gibson 08-25-2004, 04:50 PM I guess it's just a sense of nationalism, a supporting of your country's athletes you can take pride in striving to be the best on the field of play. Guess you just don't feel it is all.
igofast 08-25-2004, 04:54 PM I understand cheering for a team, I root (is that how you spell root?) for the dodgers and a couple other teams. To me, it's completely different. I see the dodgers all season. I follow their stats, I follow their roster, I go to their games, I'm familiar with them. When some 12 year old girl from Iowa I've never heard of does well on the balance beam, I don't care.
Snouter 08-25-2004, 04:59 PM igofast, this thread was a great benefit to you so far in helping you understand the simple rules of baseball. :nice:
But why is it that you "don't care" about so many things? Is it pure selfishness, or is it jealously and hatred of others?

A video camera hooked to a computer can be used to judge some of those events if it compares what the athlete does with what theoretically should be done based on the software that is agreed upon by all contestants.
Even the beach volleyball, which unfortunately turns out to have a lot of fugly competitors could use high tech means to determine in the ball is in or outside the lines.
The other alternative is to not allow semi-3d world moron umps to be hired. No wonder they get beaten after some soccer games. :p

Yes, it's also given you a chance to be arrogant and condescending. :nice:
But why is it that you "don't care" about so many things? Is it pure selfishness, or is it jealously and hatred of others?
My lack of interest in the olympics has nothing to do with selfishness, jealousy, or hatred.
Do you "not care" if I sleep on my left or right side out of selfishness? Jealousy? Hatred? I would bet it's more along the lines of it not having any baring on your life. The olympics have no baring on my life.
Now stop pretending you know anything about me.

(watches the irony walk...no, speed walk by.....)
Shelter 08-31-2004, 03:19 AM the boxing officiating was by far the worst i have ever seen at an olympics. so many scoring blows were not counted, and many good fighters from several countries were out early because of the lousy jobs of scoring by refs. the gymnastics refs were horrible as well, and there were several swimming judges who seemed to deerve a swift kick in the head as well. It seems that the majority of the bad officiating was japanese judges against other countries. Did we all do something to upset japan?? LOL
