The reasons America always wins the most metals is because the US has a large population coupled with a superior culture: that is high productivity and thus high capital accumulation which funds training, a competitive spirit, a history of love of sport and advanced methods and institutions for developing athletes.
jadatrack 08-19-2004, 12:52 AM michael phelps is awesome, but ian thorpe is sexay. i really want a nickname like the thorpedo
did you see the swimming relay last night? that really proved that the US is doing great this year...they took away australia's winning streak.
JoeyNormal 08-19-2004, 05:44 AM Don't you mean Chinese kicking butt and taking name?
Chris 08-19-2004, 06:02 AM Population of the United States:
293,027,571
Medals won:
29
Population of Australia:
20,003,249 (we seemed to have gained 2 million when I wasn't looking)
Medals won:
16
If the US was the size of Australia, it would only have won 2 medals, while if Australia was the size of the US, we would have won 234 medals :p

I watched it, it was an amazing race! America led easily through the first three swimmers, then Thorpe closed the gap within his first 50 meters, and it stayed neck and neck, (America, Australia), for the rest of the race. :nice:
My only beef was that I heard the results of the race on the radio, before I got a chance to watch on TV.
Powerboss 08-19-2004, 07:01 AM As of right now the US has 29 medals, the Communist Chinese have 22.
:usa:
It just ain't the same since the Evil Empire is gone.

They are still ahead : 11 gold to 10 ...
Plus how many will you have to relinquish for doping in, say , 2 years ? :D

it seems that all of the swim races have been exciting this year. like the two between that japanese guy and brian hansen. i only got to see the first race though :( all of the swimmers this year are so close in times that the races aren't just one person in the lead the entire time....they're actually interesting. i normally ignore the olympics, but i've become addicted this year.

Dont let the Multicultural Liberal Freaks hear you say this. Remember "All cultures are EQUAL"

LOL my slob of a 11th grade teacher told us that once. I'll never forget it. Never backed it up, just claimed it was true. I wish I knew then what I know now I would have asked her to prove it, then when she couldn't proven than in fact some cultures are superior to others.

How do you go about proving something like that?

Here is my argument:
Cultures do not adopt electricity over candles simply because they are different, but because they are superior. Cultures do not adopt logic over mysticism simply because its different, but because it is superior. Cultures whose values are based on substantial logical truths rather than lies, i.e. the moon is the moon, are superior to those based on social constructs and mysticism, i.e. the moon is our god
There is no such thing as 'equality' anyhow. Equality is a social construct. It does not exist in nature. Cultures are natural phenomenon, therefore they cannot be equal. Nature doesn’t create equality. Equality is a man made idea and only “equality under the law” is possible as the “law” is also a man made abstraction, a concept. Nature is not an abstraction, it exists for its own sake independent of any definition of man.
Where do I sign up to live in ignorance in a cave. Why do humans live in houses rather than caves? To be different or because one way is objectively superior to the other? Are cultures therfore just "different" or range in various levels of superiority in contrast to one another?
And what exactly is this superior? Because that which allows a man to exist as a man is superior to that which hinders his survival. This is a simple definition of morality. Using simple tools of logic, we can consider two different actions or ways of life and determine which is superior: which is true and which is false, which is moral and which is not, which is a desirable state and which is not, which is more conducive to man’s needs and which is not, which is more productive and which is not, which is more skillful and which is not, and the list goes on. This kind of discretion can also be applied to entire cultures and nations. Remember, the US has the highest immigration rate in the world and the lowest emigration rate. I wonder why
Cultures tend to evolve, not devolve, and people tend to immigrate to culture that are superior, more modern, not the converse
Logic. Here is a good argument: read "The Greatness of Western Civilization"

igofast 08-20-2004, 12:31 PM Cultures do not adopt logic over mysticism simply because its different, but because it is superior.
Without arguing whether or not you're right, you realize mysticism is rampant in western culture, right?
Patrician 08-20-2004, 03:14 PM Without arguing whether or not you're right, you realize mysticism is rampant in western culture, right?
You have no idea what you are talking about. There is a reason why Western civilizations have sent men to the moon while primitive tribes in Africa and Latin America consider the moon to be a god. It is because the West celebrates reason while primitives reject it. Mysticism exists in the West. It is not rampant.
igofast 08-20-2004, 03:50 PM I do have an idea what I'm talking about, it's pretty rampant. Religion is mysticism. In God We Trust!

Clearly, as Australia has more medal per capita, its culture ownz yours.

Religion is. God is not. The West is not very religious. Futhermore, the west separtes faith and science and faith and goverment. They hardly ever mix.
Rayney 08-21-2004, 12:11 AM sexay i tell you! i think it's the accent
By that premise, all Australians are sex- ok, Ill go with that.

well, not all australians. only those between ages 16 and 60 and of decent weight and build. but even without the accent, ian thorpe is still sexay. his body is awesome, as are all swimmers, and he looks great in the before game interviews. my mom thinks so too. so there :p
it's quite worrying though when you consider what event China the eastern european states, russia and UAE have performed well in
it was the shooting events.
does anyone else find this worrying that China has produced some fine shooters and have taken a few golds more in shooting than the US?
it is worrying
