View Full Version : B:
lilnymph 07-13-2004, 09:11 AM Just wondering how many people actually have a b: drive on their computer, and what they use it for. I myself and up to about q: on my Drive numberings, but haven't got anything on B: Force of habit I suppose hehe.

I don't seem to have a B: drive. I thought my zip was B but I guess not
h2g2Fan 07-13-2004, 11:27 AM Drive letters don't really mean anything anymore, but they default to A: floppy, skip B:, then C: ... for the # of hard drives, then the next ones are CD drives.
But you can change them!
Start Menu -> Control Panel -> Computer Management
Inside that, Disk Management. :]
they do mean something. One format/install I did of XP made my HDD D:, it really ****ed up everything!
i haven't had a b: drive since i got rid of my 486 w/ a 5.25"...
Gibson 07-13-2004, 02:46 PM A: and B: are reserved for devices affixed on the Floppy bus. C:-Z: can be anything else from IDE, SATA, USB or NFS.
h2g2Fan 07-13-2004, 02:56 PM They used to be, Gibson.
Gibson 07-13-2004, 03:13 PM By default, they still are :P
And Kraw, the reason is there always has to be a c: partition for a windows install.
I bid ye all convert to the /dev/hda setup :eek3:

howbout/no<?>!
TheGreatMonkey 08-03-2004, 08:08 PM To translate what gibson said out of geek speak. A:/ is for a 3.5 in floppy drive B:/ is a 5.25 in Floppy drive (these were the original floppy disks, and were actualy floppy, unlike the harder 3.5's). This holds true until you get to windows XP where you can designate any drive to A-ZZ.

you have it backwards there chief ;) 5.25" were out first and were normally A:\ (and B:\ if you had 2), and later 3.5" were B:\... but that doesn't really matter now does it? :p
92Notch 08-03-2004, 10:22 PM they do mean something. One format/install I did of XP made my HDD D:, it really ****ed up everything!
Yeah .... I've had that happen to me a few times out of hundered of builds .... not sure what causes it. It does really **** **** up.... I reformat and start over.

it's whatever is in the fd0 space :p

It's because the MBR looks ALWAYS at C:\ for a boot.ini for windows or a command.com/autoexec.bat for older windows systems. :)

BAH!
I know the 5.25 are older. I've just always seen them designated as drive b: in every system that still has them.

It was for performance issues. Faster drive got the master spot. Slower drive got the slave spot :)
TheGreatMonkey 08-04-2004, 12:21 AM I seem to recall that there we two channels, even back then, and each drive had it's own, and therefore each got a master "spot".

still first bus :P
nowadays it's just fd0 and fd1
back in the day it coulda been fda(primary floppy bus cable) and fdb(secondary floppy bus cable)
TheGreatMonkey 08-04-2004, 12:38 AM It doesn't matter which bus. You could swap the connectors, and it would still read the same designations.
When the bios idetifies the drives, it assigns 3.5 floppy as drive a: 5.25 as drive b: and HDD as drive c:
Before the 3.5's the 5.25's where drive a:, but they got pushed to b: when the newer/faster/higher capacity 3.5's came out. when the HDD's came out, instead of pushing everything back again, they just made it c:
Dr_EluSivE 08-04-2004, 12:57 PM you guys know that you can go to drive management in win XP and reassign drive letters right? If you install and it happens to think its drive D, dont reformat, just go change the drive letter in windows.
Dr.
DngrMse 08-04-2004, 01:00 PM I wanted to install an Æ: drive on my machine. You know, for tracking a 'certain' individual here on DA. But windows would'nt let me. Damn you, Bill Gates!
Monster 08-04-2004, 04:26 PM these were the original floppy disks
*BUZZ* WRONG!
There were once disks measuring 8.25".

the PC boots fine ... the boot INI does not care about drive letters (it only cars about what buss, what location on the buss, and what partition of the drive) .... but I do ... I do not want my primary drive as "D" .... oh, and I remember what causes it with consistancy .... it's when you have sometnig like and IDE Zip drive on the same buss as the HD when loading Windows for the first time .... for some reason at least 50% of the time it'll make the zip "c" (even though it's the slave, or in the slave posistion on the cable w/ cable select enabled) and it'll make the HD "d" .... it causes troubble for me when that happens becuase it's usually when I'm building a new OS image to be deployed to a large # of PC's ... as I'm sure you can assume, apps and other "stuff" that I may "push" in the future don't like it when the pri drive is "d".... as soon as I notice it ... I disconnect everything but the HD from buss 0 and start over.... then connect it later after the load.
The Frog 08-11-2004, 01:16 AM For the record, I have a drive B on each of the PCs that I have with a Zip drive

Are you running XP or 98? If your runnig anything before XP that would be impressive.
lilnymph 08-12-2004, 04:02 AM Pretty sure a friend of mine used to have his Zip Drive as B: under Win 2k. Could be wrong though.
Hugs
