Why do some people insist on buying the top of the light, heavyweight gaming rigs from alienware or falcon, etc. when they're just going to do web browsing and word processing? Something from Tiny.com would be infinitely better suited for most people, yet the competitveness of the computer world keeps many people buying and upgrading at an insane speed.

What drives people to spend hundreds of dollars more on features they'll never use?

A genuine desire to get the best system as well as fast talking sales people.

My dad is a classic example of this. He got this killer system but all he uses it for is word processing and spreadsheets.

He actually got upset because he could not find any systems out there with 5 1/4" floppy drives. He insists on getting one because he runs these very old DOS based programs and keeps the same software he has had for the last 15 years.

The problem is when you need to replace an old system (say for something like a hardware failure that can't be fixed) there aren't as many options. If all you do is word processing, web browsing, email, etc, you're still stuck getting a lot more computer than you need.

Sure, you don't have to buy the best system out there, but some of them are so cheap people think they might as well.
