are they REALLY that important? Now that intel has gone to naming their CPU's instead of using the clock speed, will that help Intel in their battle with AMD for supremacy?
I've read alot on the new Centrino processors from Intel being FAST, even the 1.4ghz processors in lappys!
Clock speeds are important to sell computers, in that the typical consumer believes that clock speeds have an appreciable affect on performance. Von Neumann's principle shows, however, that the key to speed is in the bus. After that, a good size cache and an efficient pipeline method are the keys to speed.

We;;, yeah, if you have minimal RAM, cache, a slow bus, etc,, you aren't going to get any extra benefit out of that extra CPU speed. Even if you have all that (as has been mentioned in another thread) how many people make even close to full use of their computer's full capability?
