Are you better or worse off than say 10 years ago?
With all the talk of lay-offs and re-structuring, the debt trap, wobble stock market etc.

Would you say better or worse, and how has it affected your life?

I'm better off, I have reduced debt, recently moved to a nicer home, new car etc. I seem to have more money to spend on things I wouldn't have bought 5 years ago. The difference is subtle but all adds to the enjoyment of everyday life and less stress. I have to say though, mostly this is due to doing the hard yards when times were tougher so I guess I feel I have paid my dues.

How about you?

I was 11.

So I'd say I'm better off.

I just realized this thread was about finances.

I'm much worse off, then. Since I no longer have my parent's bankroll supporting me.

Oh wait, yes I do, it just requires asking. ;]

Lets see... I would have been 14

At that age I was still fascinated by my tallywhacker.

...I still am.

Nothing has changed.

And why would I get them all back? Taxes/Social Security, or whatever that other thing is is taking a nice chunk of my paycheck. :not:

I saw a sign the other day.... Something like

Money doesn't buy everything but it certainly does keep you in touch with your children.http://users.pandora.be/eforum/emoticons4u/fam/fam05.gif

Might be true I suspect.

Hell Yeah .... 10 years ago I was working at Hardees making 4.50/hr .... barely enough to pay for the car insurance / gas to get to work. :) I'm in a slightly better posistion now.

It has nothing to do with age. It's all about your income and write offs.

I don't get all my tax money back. I was about $1,500-$2,000 short last year on federal (more the year before) and didn't get any state tax back. I am now classified as the elite rich who can afford to give it up for the lower class.

I am MUCH better off...since Im no longer gettting pocket money from my parents, but rather earning it in a piss easy payroll job :)

I'm just about the same ... only a little more pay (one promotion in 10 f'ing years) ... but I have a lot more stress and less free time and more responsibilities than I ever had ...

I've gotta revise my answer ... I'm worse off. Working 60+ hours a week and still having 'too much month at the end of my money'.

Working 60+ hours a week

Ouch!!

Seems a lot of people are working a lot longer these days for the same money. You wouldn't mind so much if the pay packet reflected the extra hours.

I've gotta revise my answer ... I'm worse off

You sound like you feel like this. Gettin no where fast. http://www.emotipad.com/emoticons/Stuck%20in%20Ice.gif

I hope my question hasn't depressed you. Sometimes we feel like we are going no where but when you look back you realise you actually have, it just didn't seem so at the time. Hang in there.

Your question didn't depress me; what depresses me is that my situation is becoming more and more common. As well as couples who used to be able get by with only one of them working; but now both of them have to work.

Something has got to 'give' sooner or later.

BTW, as far as hours of work go; my personal 'record' for hours in a single week is 108 hours (unless you count the tour I pulled in Iraq, in which case it was 24/7 for over a year). Unfortunately, because I'm active duty military, I get paid the same every month regardless of whether I work my @ss off or I'm slacking off.
