What part of Afghanistan are you in? I'm supposed to be heading back there this sometime this summer, in Kabul or at a PRT base. How much longer are you there for?

I don't know

Good pics

I especially liked that one :)

Do you have these in high-res? I might come nagging for it if my little periodicle is doing a piece on Afghanistan(if you don't mind that is)

What're doing down there anyway? I suppose you're in the army?

I don't know

Frankie,

I'm in Bagram and will be here until March '05. PRT work would be pretty interesting, I think.

IDK - yes, I have the high-res version of these.

I'm working nights right now, so I don't see much in the way of daylight and chances for good pictures. These were all from right around the perimeter here. I'll definitely add more as I get them taken.

Most interesting. Afghanistan is a beautiful place. Such a shame that the country has known little peace since the 1980 Soviet invasion.

Here on Bagram, a bazaar is held every Friday morning. I decided to take a little time this morning to wander over and see about taking some more pictures in the limited daylight that I’m fully conscious for. I’ve become well accustomed to working at nights now and it was nice to be out in the sunshine for awhile. The first few pictures are of our living area. This one is our “neighborhood” – note the exquisite attention paid to landscaping and area beautification. The upstairs containers on the immediate left are the showers. The one story containers in the center left are the bathrooms. The wooden huts down the center are called “B-Huts” – they are all new construction and as construction continues, they will replace the tents shown on the immediate right.

“B-Huts” typically hold 6-8 soldiers. Not too much too complain about here – they have heating and AC, and although a little cramped, the amount of time spent in them is pretty much only that spent sleeping.

All the comforts of home – the camouflage poncho liner “woobie” is the greatest invention in the Army inventory.

Construction, maintenance and repair is ongoing 24/7 here. This dumptruck was filling potholes with gravel when we left for the bazaar. The drivers seem to be pretty proud of their “jingle trucks” – this one got out and moved a bunch of softball sized rocks rather than drive over them. We noted that the insides of his doors were also plastered with pinup photographs of Middle Eastern beauties similar to the one shown behind his driver’s side window.

The bazaar was pretty typical of what you’d expect to find. Basically a flea market with trinkets and souvenirs. Bargaining for better prices is the order of the day, and the merchants are more than willing to engage in it. There are a lot of carpets, drapes, jewelry, watches, DVD’s, etc…. Swords and old rifles are pretty common as well.

“Haji” isn’t a bad word
