I don't have a problem with the censoring of the public forums. While I am anti-censorship in most instances, I think that people deserve to choose what they see, and since it is entirely possible that people would stumble across this site and, if it was uncensored, might view some things that they would prefer not to see, the censorship of certain words is fine with me.

Those of us who do wish to see such language have a place we can go to see it or use it. It's no big deal.

Some speech should be censored so that more speech can occur. I place a priority on some speech over others.

For instance spamming and general idiotry should be censored.

The rest I'm liberal about.

It's a private board, it can make the rules and I can live with them either way.

Great new sigbanner Crim :nice:

In a perfect world, DA would not be censored. Unfortunately, we don't live in a perfect world :)

It would make it a logistic (and legal) nightmare to run and administer the site.

The other thing is that my 'motto' for DA is that 'everyone should have a voice.' Unfortunately, the sometimes means SOME censorship, in order to make people comfortable posting here.

I believe in personal censorship. You're a big boy now, you can censor what you view if you don't want to see it. I'd say in a perfect world, there would be an option to turn censors on/off for members.

I don't like the "****" stars. They make the word seem nastier and makes my sentence flow less elegantly.

I have no problem with DA censoring. If Manu wants certain words banned on his board than that is his right.

Obviously no one would argue that Manu doesn't have the "right" to censor his own board, I think the question is "does it make the board better".

IMO there's plusses and minuses. Ideally I have found that the coolest boards are uncensored but closely moderated. So if anyone starts spamming they get banned. The problem is that boards are always clique-ish and "unfair" moderating can kill the board.

Uncensored boards can be great, but they almost always degenerate into spam-filled nonsense.

I think DA has a pretty good mix, at times it is a little too strict, but it does in some ways foster slightly more intelligible discourse.

I mainly like to talk politics on message boards, so it's cool to have conversations that can't devolve into shouting matches and name-calling. However, all the rules in the world can't make people think rationally and have common sense (in other words, think like me:p ).

On my ideal political message board, the words "conservative", "liberal" "leftist", "right-winger" "socialist", "fascist", "communist", etc. would be censored words. I think many people on DA would be rendered mute were such a policy to be implemented.
