View Full Version : AI, Droids, Robots...talk amongst yourselves.
Redfield 02-25-2002, 06:43 PM About a year-or-so ago, Honda unveiled ASIMO (Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility). Asimo was Honda's latest, following the hummanoid robot, P3. There are pros and cons to this technology, of course.
What I want to know is:
ASIMO...R2D2, Short Circuit's "Johnny 5", or ED-209?
For more info on Honda's Hummanoid Robot project click here (http://world.honda.com/robot).
hmmm.. not really sure what you are asking.
I think it is just a matter of time before bots go mainstream. As with all things electronic, the quality will go up and the price will go down.
It will be all fine and great, until they TRY AND TAKE OVER THE WORLD!
:)
well, I am reading up.. post more links!
ChaoticThoughts 02-26-2002, 12:09 AM I have been interested in this, and keeping my ear open.
Although the dancing robot from honda was entetaining, it was to demonstrate the mobility of a robot. So, it was one peice of the puzzle. If we are going to have useful robots, they should be able to move around.
The most complex and slowly evolving puzzle peice is AI. Although sci-fi movies love it, it is so complex, we only advanced so far. There were 2 organizations that come to mind- one that has rooms full of computers processing to create the thinking process by trying to learn from yes/no situations. The people enter daily news, and the AI asks if certain things are true or not.
The other scientists were working on "common knowledge" like, gravity pulls things down, and you have to open a bottle, before you can pour it, etc.
Redfield 02-26-2002, 12:27 AM Don't you believe that a robot that posesses the combination of 1) the mobility of an ASIMO hummanoid robot and 2) the "artificial intelligence" of AIBO (granted it's a toy) is just around the corner?
RedLine99 02-26-2002, 12:48 AM I want a Cherry2000...anything less is meaningless:D

One thing is for sure: When it is avaliable, $$$$$$$$$, more than its worth. No "Jetsons" robots cleaning the house.

R2-D2 Interactive Astromech Droid
While feisty, Industrial Automaton's stalwart astromech line has proven their worth across the galaxy in countless situations. If you've ever dreamed of having an R2-unit to do your bidding, here's your chance.
This 18" replica of Artoo-Detoo comes with infrared scanning, and working sonar for navigation. The voice-commanded unit recognizes over 40 spoken phrases, plays six exciting games, sings five songs and includes a security light beam and room alarm. Always rising to the occasion, the droid's retractable arm is designed to hold a 12-ounce beverage can.
:D Gotta get me one of them!
What I find interesting is AI...
Do you think we will ever make one?

I feel that AIBO and the model that follows it (ERS-220) are moving us closer to the a true AI sentient. Granted, they are primitive, in the sense that they are preprogrammed emotions, however, the ERS-220 has the ability to learn the habits of its owner.
