Should the internet be regulated and censored? Right now all forms of mature or offensive material is available online from pornography to violence to racial hate to anything imageinable.

Should this be regulated and censored?

Should there be some form of 'separation' between the 'open internet' and the 'censored' internet?

i would say no, with exception to children's availability to view mature material.

Overall, I'd say no to censorship. However, I wish that there was a way for adware/spyware to stop changing your homepage & setting it on porn sites. Try explaining that one to a 10 year old..or your 64 year old mother

If I knew who to write a complain about it to, I would.

Personal (and even moreso, parental) responsibility needs to come before censorship.

Beatlebabe - stop using IE and the problem will go away. Mozilla is your friend.

Kyle is right. It's time for parents to stop blaming everybody else when they are to blame for the way their children are.

After the Columbine massacre, the WASPs were quick to blame the media, video games, movies, et cetera, when the simple act of PAYING ATTENTION TO THEIR CHILDREN would have probably stopped the entire incident.

Censorship has its place in protecting children who are too young to choose and in offering a choice to those who might not wish to see or hear certain things, but that's as far as censorship should go. It should never bar or ban anything, it should only offer a choice. The current incarnation of censorship is a perversion of the concept and should be done away with until people are intelligent enough to realize that not everybody follows their beliefs (especially religious beliefs) and that they have no right to dictate the choices another human being can make.

I don't want censorship on the internet. Illegal activies should not be supported on it, but in terms of content, it should not be censored at all.

I won't mind a 'safe list' of sites, for a 'kids web' but not censorhsip.

The internet should not be censored. If you dont want to view something, put a block on it.

Rizzo-

What about when something is blatnatly misleading. Like, NASA.com (not .gov) used to be a porn site. The government sued and got it taken offline.

But should blantantly misleading be illegal? What about random hardcore porn in junk mail? should that be illegal?

I don't think it should be illegal, no, because some people may not mind seeing it. But when it is displayed as it sometimes is, people aren't given a choice in the matter. I don't think it should be stopped, but people should be able to use filters that would disallow any content they CHOSE not to see. It should not be mandatory for such a filter to be in place, though.

Anything on the internet that is used to hornswaggle people and children should be deemed illegal.

Since I am a victim of hardcore porn spam email, it should be illegal as well. You should have the choice of who or what sends you email. If you get unwanted spam you should be able to take yourself off the email list (if it does work at all) or block the email address.

Half the time when I got spam, I tried unregistering my email address from a link provided by the sender. A majority of the time, I still receieved email from that specific sender.

But Rizzo, isn't that a form of censorship?

i generally think censorship shouldn't be taken to the extremes
i already think it is ridiculous how american tv censors certain words, etc

I guess thats kind of my point.

We have SUCH a negative connotation the minute someoen mentions 'censorship' but some level of it we DO want.

some level... i guess... like things that **** people over (bad deals etc... altho that's hard to do i suppose)
but generally i don't believe in censorship at all i think... i mean, my parents (my mum) never really said that i'm not allowed to watch certain shows or things like that, i'm not a bad person either
and sometimes i think quite the opposite, like this you learn more about what's good and what's not for you imo

wah i'm trying to make sense, but i'm too tired, which also makes me too lazy to type
i'm sorry :p

I don't know

Yes, in extreme cases, sutch as child porn, there needs to be censorship.

No, it should not be cnesored. I also agree that people should put blocks on what they don't want to see and monitor their children.

I get ZERO spam e-mail and my home page is NEVER changed for me EVER. This is because I do NOT click on banner ads of any kind and I also do not register for sites that want to send me anything in my e-mail.

The quickest way to assure that your in box will be filled with spam is to click on the link that supposedly takes you off their e-mail list. You are in effect telling them that you are a valid e-mail address and in fact read their junk.
