View Full Version : recommend a book for me
now i don't like t read one book at a time, i like to have a couple of books on the go at once. don't ask why.
i basically like alot of types of books. Sport, fiction (detective and thriller especially), Politics, Thrillers, comedy, Historical (in bold as it wasn't mentioned before
so go ahead.
up until recently actually i didn't read at all
the basis of this thread is so that i get book recommendations
please try to give a little reason for recommending the book
all political books are welcomed regardless of political ideology of the book
also this will be an ongoing thread. once i get a recommnedation, i'm happy with, the thread DOESN'T stop. it keeps going as i'd be continously reading so that after a while i'll need more book recommendations and it's a waste if i have to start a new thread everytime.
I will also edit posts if i buy a book of the list so that it is up to date. the edit will just be for taking out the book suggestion if i buy the book
SpabSFW 03-17-2004, 05:05 PM Non-fiction:
Into Thin Air (Jon Kraukauer)
1996 Mt. Everest expedition, completely absorbing
Mindhunter (John Douglas)
profiling serial killers
The Mountain People (Colin Turnbull)
the whys and hows about a dying tribe
Fiction:
One Hundred Years of Solitude (Gabriel Garcia Marquez)
lyrical and beautiful, surreal
The Virgin Suicides (Jeffrey Eugenides)
similar to marquez, beautiful writing
Resurrection (Leo Tolstoy)
toguh start but don't give up, wonderful concepts
A Time to Kill (John Grisham)
social cause, the blurring of good and evil
Of Human Bondage (W. Somerset Maugham)
classis, you'll see why
Philosophy:
Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance (Robert Pirsig)
Even Cowgirls Get the Blues (Tom Robbins)
East of Eden (John Steinbeck)
good and evil, human strengths and weakness
SpabSFW 03-17-2004, 05:22 PM Humor: anything John Irving :)
World According to Garp
The Water-Method Man
Hotel New Hampshire
Cider House Rules
I've read others, but those were the best.

Richard Miniter: Losing Bin Laden
thanks banky. i'll look into them though i think we do have a copy of the first one here

i've printed out the list of books. 2what i'll probably do is bring in the list of books to a bookshop and ask them "do they have any of those books in stock?
there's 2 bookshops in the town wher eigo to college in so they should have some of them. i think i've seen both the Steinbakc and Grisham books in one of them.
i'll probably buy three books as i;'m finished with all the 3 that i was reading. they were all excellent.
i'll be going to these bookshops on thursday evening.
i've also seen some books that could be of interest and i will use those a sbakcups if i don't get these one's in the bookshops.
these might be of interest but i would take all your suggestions above them:
NO logo - Naimi Klein
The bad mother's handbook - kate long#
and also there was a book about Verdun battle of world war 1
i personally don't like shopping online for books.
SpabSFW 03-28-2004, 03:54 PM Tá bron orm, ach nil tá a fhios agam sa do leabharta.
You let me know if they are any good when you finish them. :)
As to buying online, I do it a lot and I've never had trouble. Amazon loves me. :o
So you may want to reconsider for the hard to find stuff. Check out this price...

Even with shipping, it's usually not too bad.
that is good value
but alas, i don't actually have a credit card so that iis the main reason that i wouldn't buy books online.
i also would have serious worries about a company and their chances of survival if they were to offer me a credit card.

Smart and honest, good combination IFF. :)
thanks.
i went and bought books on thursday evening.
the only one surprisingly in stock was "Into Thin Air" so i've bought it.
i also bought 2 of the books i mentioned "No logo" and the"bad mothers handbook"
i'm currently finding it difficult to find time to read these books. but Into Thin Air and the bad mother's handbook hgave proved to be good read's so far. i'm hoping no logo will improve
proof of my lack of reading time is that i also have 1 unread cycling magazine and one half-read cycling magazine and bedside stool
Note to everyone:
please try to recommend a book for me. in june, my brother seán is sending an order in to amazon for a loit fo stuff (cd's) and i've asked him if i could order 4 books. he siad ok.
2 of the books will be Bill O'Reilly books but i've not yet decided on the other 2. at least one of them will be from the above mentioned books (so either spab or banky) and
if i get no new recommendations, it'd be either 2 spab's recommnedations or 1 banky and 1 spab. the Richard Miniter book does sound like an interesting read.
if i do get new recommendations, then it would be 1 spab and 1 of the toehr people's recommendation i think. it's the propotionment of the recommendations. spab has suggested alot xso that's why there should be one spab recommendation.
Also please try to get History vbooks in there.
thanks you all rock
