Do you view the modern mainstream media as information, entertainment, or a precarious mixture of both?
Do you view that as a good or bad trait of the media?

View Full Version : Modern Media: Information or Entertainment? Manu 02-26-2004, 03:47 AM Do you view the modern mainstream media as information, entertainment, or a precarious mixture of both? Do you view that as a good or bad trait of the media? JAT 02-26-2004, 05:15 AM There's too much entertainment and not enough information often, particularly in the case of local televised news. There are too many stories about inane and superficial subjects, but not enough information about more important matters, such as to do with local or state government. 302Riz 02-26-2004, 09:22 AM Its all about the entertainment now... All the local evening news cares about is ratings and they will do anyting to suck in a viewer. I hardly find anything informative on the news anymore. Its not worth watching. 206 02-26-2004, 12:53 PM I think it can be both. But I also think that there's too much information available. Whenever a news item 'Breaks', it seems that EVERY station airs it within minutes. OVERLOAD! OVERLOAD! Like the State of the Union address. Why do we need twenty stations showing it? Isn't two or three enough?   Red 02-27-2004, 09:47 PM Originally posted by 302Riz Its all about the entertainment now... How about a pathetic attempt at both and an unfortunate mix of neither? Originally posted by 206 But I also think that there's too much information available. lmao! That's the funniest thing I've heard in a while. I think (and hope) what you mean is there is a reptition of the same crap on every station, over and over. Generally the most important news and information is rarely reported in the mainstream media at all, or it is relegated to footnotes on page 27A. Victor7 02-29-2004, 02:36 PM Manu as the boss of a form of media do you think you are doing the right thing giving a voice to Nazis, Neo-Facists, Skinheads, Communists and other ill oriented people? seekerofvisions 03-01-2004, 07:07 PM Originally posted by Manu Do you view the modern mainstream media as information, entertainment, or a precarious mixture of both? Do you view that as a good or bad trait of the media? unfortunately it seems to be mostly entertainment news, but this depends on which station you happen to be watching. it also depends on which type media you are referring to. there are a wide selection of magazines and newspapers who offer more of a global range of news items (which i prefer to read about and not just my town or state or even country) for your perusal. Liss Saves the World 03-15-2004, 02:30 PM It's all about entertainment. Most of the things people really need to know about aren't that interesting. Go ask 10 people who the secretary of education is, then ask them who won American Idol last season. Any guesses on which will get the most response? Monster 03-15-2004, 02:48 PM We have a Secretary of Education? I can name my children's teachers and the zipcode for Beverly Hills though. :hmm: Liss Saves the World 03-17-2004, 12:40 PM The secretary of education's name is Rod Paige. There is a petition circulating right now to get him out of office. Why? At a closed meeting attended my governors, he recently called the National Education Association a "coalition of the whining" and a "terrorist organization." The NEA is made up of 3 million teachers from around the country. And he would be correct. Don't think I'll be signing any petition. |
