Nick 02-22-2004, 09:37 PM Victim and also gave it out. **** happens and people should learn to deal with it. If you want to be involved with a group or organization sometimes it is neccasary to make a sacrifice. I do not condone any sick **** like you may hear about from time to time, but a little hazing is good and builds comradery when everyone has to go through it at one time mike75 02-23-2004, 11:09 PM I played football and we got hazed when you were the freshman on the varsity squad but you got to give it out when you were the juniors and senior. Now I am not saying we beat kids or hurt them but they carried out pads and had to be on the scout team and get the crapped kicked out of them. lilnymph 02-24-2004, 05:19 AM Never been hazed, Doesn't really happen as much over here in the UK (or if it does I never noticed it). We prefer the "go out and get drunk together" aproach to team building with new members ;) Hugs lilnymph Criminal 02-24-2004, 06:30 AM My own story? I told this 1000 times but I will tell it again. When I was in my first year of college I was at the small crappy Catholic Liberal Arts college and they had this organized hazing ritual. They chose a small group of incomming students to publically humiliate. I was one of those chosen. I myself am very strongly against hazing. It has no place in the educational system. Hazing DOES NOT build character. It just makes young people angry and mal adjusted. And by the way, I NEVER hazed a fellow student and would never tolerate it ever again. I think young people need to take a stand and stand up to these bullies. I don't give a sh*t if it happens in the educational system and if it is condoned by the authorities. F*CK THE AUTHORITIES... lilnymph 02-24-2004, 06:34 AM I have never seen the point to hazing. Sure some of the teams I was in used to pull pranks on one another, but that was more between the older members, and never against people who had just joined, untill they where settled in. Going out for a few drinks does much more for the team spirit and comradeship than ANY hazing could do, in my opinion. Hugs lilnymph I don't know 02-24-2004, 07:05 AM what's hazing? Criminal 02-24-2004, 01:57 PM Originally posted by I don't know what's hazing? Organized harassment of individuals, usually in an educational setting. Examples of hazing are the ritual abuse of Cadets at West Point, in College Fraternaties, the organized beatings of army recruits (as is practiced in the Russian army, and which supposedly no longer exists in the US army), abuses of new players on sports teams and so on and so forth. Supposedly, the purpose is to build esperit de corps, by collectively abusing groups of people the group becomes stronger. It actually has some puropse in military units where a cohesive group is necessary for survival. But really, I see little reason for such abuse to exist in a school setting. Mostly I think its a means to control students and channel their anger towards their fellow students instead of towards the administration. At least it was in the school I went to. I don't know 02-24-2004, 04:50 PM fascinating. Sounds dumb, but you seem to be kind of biased :p I've just experienced the old individualist stuff myself. PFDarkside 02-24-2004, 05:45 PM I think it's ok in resonable doses... I think it does help build cohesiveness when it's used in the "boot camp" stage of an activity, then stops at the end of that stage. Example: Training camp for a sport, make the freshmen carry pads, luggage, clean up meals, etc... It makes the freshmen form bonds with each other. Then at the end of the camp, the Seniors accept them into the organization in some sort of ritualistic manner, and it stops before the next stage starts. lilnymph 02-25-2004, 03:17 AM I still say accepting them at the beginning would form a betterm nire cohesive, bond, but thats just me. To my mind its more for the fun of the people putting others through the hazing, than any possible benifits for the team. Hugs lilnymph |
