View Full Version : Why The Big Media Killed Dean's Candidacy

Interesting argument.
By David Podvin
On December 1, 2003, Howard Dean was ahead by twenty points in the polls when he appeared on Hardball with Chris Matthews and said, “We're going to break up the giant media enterprises.” This pronouncement went far beyond the governor’s previous public musings about possibly re-regulating the communications industry, and amounted to a declaration of war on the corporations that administer the flow of information in the United States.
It was an extraordinarily noble and dangerous thing to do: when he advocated a truly free press, Dr. Dean was provoking the corrupt media conglomerates that control what most Americans see and hear and read, and thereby control what most Americans think.
The media giants quickly responded by crushing his high-flying campaign with the greatest of ease. This time, they didn’t even have to invent a scandal in order to achieve the desired result; merely by chanting the word “unelectable” at maximum volume, the mainstream media maneuvered Democratic voters into switching their support to someone who poses no threat to the status quo . . .
ColWTH 02-18-2004, 10:56 PM ... and the wacky "blame any one but the candidate" theories begin!
DngrMse 02-18-2004, 11:00 PM I thought it was his weird rebel yell, (Yearghhhh!), that pretty much did him in.
nah, it was the results of the Iowa. People vote for the winner, and the Media was amazed that Dean didn't win, so they made sure to focus on that, and then the scream was only icing on the cake

It was the media that made such a big issue out of it.
BIG GABE 02-18-2004, 11:22 PM Exactly. A display of enthusiam was hyped much more so than necessary. It also fit into the "angry" label quickly applied and repeated constantly
From the left's critique, Tim Russert's interview with Gov. Dean was important. There was a discrediting agenda behind it some say.
Dean had too many stronger forces working against him. The DNC establishment did not like him. The Big Media also loathed him. This was another classic case of someone being built up to be torn down by those who opposed him.
Patrician 02-18-2004, 11:50 PM I didn't bother with that, once I saw Bernie Ward's fat communist face I left that site as quick as possible.

And if a candidate is GOOD a so called "discrediting" effort will not work.
Snouter 02-19-2004, 01:49 AM I wonder if the Israel versus Palestine issue was somehow a factor. Although Dean's wife is Jewish, there seemed to be some controversy a few months ago as to how Dean would deal with the middle east. Lieberman scolded Dean for his attitude at a debate sponsered by the Congressional Black Caucus. :p Dean apparently wrote to Foxman of the ADL, the maniac who persecuted Mel Gibson and forced him to censor certain lines of the Gospels, and made amends.
Candidates comments regarding Israel:
John Edwards: [Israel is a] "vital ally"
John Kerry: "Israel must be the cause of America"
Howard Dean: "it is not our place to take sides"
Several democrat candidates mentioned that Slick Willie will be enlisted as a special middle east envoy. Get the Russian sex slaves ready. :p

Witness the surreal
Powerboss 02-19-2004, 04:38 AM The "Big Media" which is overwhelmingly liberal realized that Deans anger wouldn't win against Bush. They realized that he was too honest about his leftist, liberal agenda and wouldn't win against Bush.
So they, along with help from his Democrat opponents, did a fabulous job of taking him down.
Sort of sad, he was the only Democrat with any passion although I do question that sort of temperment at the helm.
Then they found Kerry and annointed him.
Problem is they didn't do much background checking on him and his antiwar past and voting record is red meat. Of course the liberal media will do their best to protect him and hide his record but thanks to the internet and radio we now have other avenues of getting his record out.
It is already having some effect as Edwards has seemed to make a closer race than ever expected.
Likeability is important in Presidential elections. Reagan was likeable, Clinton was Likeable, Bush Jr is likeable, Edwards is likeable. Regardless of their political stances, they all had something of a warmth to them. Kerry is in no way likeable.
I would worry more about a Edwards v Bush matchup than a Kerry v Bush matchup because of that and the fact that Edwards isn't as flaming a lib as Kerry.

Why? Because he was too enthusiastic?
I guess people perfer their presidents to be quiet and stupid... like the one we have now.
Corporate Avenger 02-19-2004, 08:04 AM Don't go threatening to break up the corporate-conservative media cartel, that's the biggest mistake Dean ever made.
302Riz 02-19-2004, 08:11 AM Its one thing to be enthusiastic/passionate. Its another thing to be absolutely insane. Dean was the latter.
If he just stated that this country is in bad shape and needed to be fixed and did not point fingers at anyone, he may have gotten my vote.
He really didnt have any solutions to our current problems. He just pointed fingers at everyone. The first candidate who doesnt point fingers and has a logical solution to solve most of the problems in the US will get my vote. Blaming Bush for everything isnt going to solve a damn thing.
Dean only has himself to blame.

No, people just don't like loonies. Dean is a loony, (yearghhhh!).
Patrician 02-19-2004, 03:19 PM power boss is right. Dean posed a threat to the Democratic base. Thats why they destroyed him
Dean was made by the media and destroyed by the media.
Victor7 02-20-2004, 12:53 PM Dean ruined his chance when he started to scream like a monkey, that scares people.
jwreck 02-20-2004, 08:25 PM I actually liked the yell, I thought it was his rambling through names of various states like a sixth grader taking a geography test that made him look stupid.
