Theoretically it's more critical thinking type education rather than much of the fact based knowledge you get in high school. It also is supposed to train you in a specific field (one's major) and prepare you for work in that field. Personally, as I matured into adulthood, the education that I received at the university was taken much more seriously then high school and I certainly did get a lot out of it. That seems to be interpreted as "employable" by far too many. I'll go out on a limb and argue that the point of a higher education is to protect the collective, by giving the individual a better ability to negotiate the environment. Basically to make every pair of eyes a scout in the future terrain. Some will protect our food supply. Some will protect our health. Others will protect the allegiance of the collective. That piece of paper means nothing as far as what you are or are not capable of doing or knowing. Manu 02-19-2004, 04:58 PM Give me something to flaunt at dinner parties... All kidding aside, higher education helps people get 'higher level' jobs, higher income, more respect/prestige, and an overall sense of accomplishment. Higher education isn't a mickey mouse like education (in the states) like high school is. The first 2 weeks of my Freshman physics class we covered what it took a year to cover in high school, no joke. Sure, higher education isn't NEEDED for any of that stuff, but it helps. I don't know 02-22-2004, 08:19 AM It should mean helping people understand and think critical and independently on a subject of their choice (with the aid of knowing what other people thought before them). It should not mean simply the insertion of a certain amount of "facts" in to your head. It could just be me, but I can tell the difference between people who have been to university, and those who never have. In general the people who went are more mature now (from being about the same at the end of school). This is just my own observations though, and I know plenty of exceptions on both sides. College opened my eyes to a lot of things. You don't really notice it when you are there, but as you mature and the years begin to pass, you can better appreciate the what you learned in college, but from a practical knowledge perspective as well as critical thinking. |
