A 21-year-old Auckland Zoo elephant enjoyed a brief spell of freedom today, causing disruption to morning traffic.

Inspector Alan Wright said the animal escaped "with great simplicity apparently -- it walked through something".

"It think it just walked through a perimeter fence," he said.
"It went through an enclosure by a children's park."
Mr Wright said the animal did not go on to the road, but "walked a fair bit" on areas of reserve.

"It wasn't running or charging. Apparently it was just walking around. It seems to have a right to do that, because you can't actually stop it."

An Auckland Zoo spokeswoman said there would be no immediate comment about the incident.
