View Full Version : Are girls really better drivers?
Blondie 01-23-2004, 01:53 AM So are girls really the better drivers?
I know it seems like a silly question but hey, I know my insurance rates are less just cuz I'm a chick. So what do you think?
Personally, I've never been pulled over and never recieved any kind of traffic or parking ticket. And trust me, I don't drive like my grandma.
Well, accidents/tickets are largely a result of luck, more than anything else. Also, I know far more girls who've gotten out of tickets or 'off with a warning' than I do guys.
In fact, I am not sure if I know a guy who has gotten out of a ticket...but I know girls who have gotten out of reckless driving (35mph over the listed speed limit)
So, part one of the answer is:
1. Girls get out of tickets more often, which is reflected in stats, which is reflected in insurance
2. I bet TEENAGED girls are better drivers than 'reckless teenage boys' but I think that tends to change, as time goes on.
So, girls may be better drivers, women are not :)
TwntyCent 01-23-2004, 02:13 AM I have never been pulled over by a cop. I guess girls just know how to work their way out of tickets better.
The Miscreant 01-23-2004, 03:08 AM In Quebec, we all drive poorly :nice:
seekerofvisions 01-23-2004, 03:14 AM i think manu made some good points. i've been pulled over numerous times and have talked my way out of every ticket but one.
in one instance i was driving 20 miles over the speed limit, no seatbelt, no insurance, no driver's license, no proof of registration, music too loud, and followed for 6 city blocks with sirens and a bullhorn.
was given a warning.
the one time i wasnt able to talk my way out of it i had been driving 103 mph in arizona. the cop said he would have let me pass on a ticket except that i passed the car in front of my on the right.
every guy i know says i got away with it because im a woman.
Monster 01-23-2004, 03:16 AM Short answer: no.
Long answer: noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.
Over 75% of the stupid things I've seen done on the L.A. freeways in recent months have been women. Typically short women in SUVs or luxury cars.
One woman, a middle-aged brunette, swerved across six lanes of traffic with zero regard for the other cars--of which I was one. Other times I've seen women with a cigarette in one hand and a cell phone in the other, driving with what I can only assume is their knee. I have never seen a man do this. Sure, we drive with our knes, but I have never seen a man with no free hands to grab the wheel. What I see is that men tend to do larger traffic screw-ups, but fewer of them than women.
My theory is that the reckless women create accidents, but don't get in them oftentimes. Men are more likely to get into the accidents they create. Of course, I have no proof of this.

state your sources, sir! and do you have eye witnesses other than your passengers?
hee actually i've seen women do some pretty dumb things while driving. putting on lipstick or mascara while driving and speaking on the cellphone. actually, my friend does this. |I
but, i must say, this doesnt prove that women are worse than men. men do really really dumb things while driving, especially if they have their friends in the car. :|
but, i'll hush now 'cause i have no sources, no witnesses and no stats to back up such generalized claims. |I
Monster 01-23-2004, 03:29 AM I have no sources, it's just a rough guesstimate based on personal observations.

exactly... biased!
such a... a.... man!
hee
i was only ever joking. :)
Kyle Gridley 01-23-2004, 05:10 AM From my own observations, men are more aggressive/faster drivers but women do more stupid stuff (using the phone, applying makeup, fussing with the kids, etc) while driving.

PFDarkside 01-23-2004, 07:18 AM I don't know.... I only have experience with 16-25 year olds, but I'd say that males are much better drivers. The thing that skews the insurance rates is this:
When was the last time you saw a young woman that wrapped a Mustang/Camaro/Trans Am around a tree? I think men are better in a day-to-day sense but do many more stupid things.
PoliticalGoddess 01-23-2004, 01:07 PM i think driving has nothing to do with sex and all to do with each individual person. i know when i first started driving i was a freakin bat out of hell and i had the tickets to prove it. i did get out of several tickets i admit (so women do have the flirt advantage, or poor me advantage). I learned from my stupidness when i was younger and now am a much better driver, though since i am not always good at paying attention i zone sometimes and have done stupid things cuz of that now and then, but i have girl friends who are way better drivers than i am and some who are worse and i would say its the same with my guy friends.
igofast 01-23-2004, 01:16 PM From my own unofficial opinion, I'm with zach on this one, 85% of the time someone is pissing me off with poor driivng skills, it's a woman. Doesn't mean women are all bad drivers, just means that most of the horrible drivers in LA that I encounter are women.
jadatrack 01-23-2004, 07:46 PM i think it depends on the car. my dad is an excellent driver when he drives the van, but i refuse to be in a car with him. he has the worst road rage out of anyone i know....he cuts people off, stalks people that cut him off, cross multiple lanes of traffic at once, speeds, runs lights, makes turns at 30mph, and stops really quickly, all while playing with the radio or talking on the phone. it's scary
men are too aggressive with driving, and women are careless

i once was cut off on the left on a two lane road while i was driving a piece o' crap ford festiva. the woman flipped me off while flying by in her 2000 suburban.
i caught up to her, flipped her off, yelled at her. this happened for about 4 blocks. went through lights, etc. when we reached a stop sign she climbed down from her car. woman stood about 7 inches taller than me and outweighed me by at least 70 pounds.
i sat in my little ford festiva as this woman asked me to get out of my car so she could proceed to kick my ass. i just called out, "i dont want to." then i drove around her and left her standing in the road.
im so brave. :|
was the dumbest thing i ever did.

I agree I think women are more easily distracted sometimes. But I think generally it is individuals.....although having said that......women are apparently more likely to drive in an emotional state.....which could certianly cause accidents.
Gibson 01-23-2004, 11:14 PM Way I see it is this
Men have a general spread of driving habits from good to bad
women are either REALLY GOOD or REALLY BAD, no happy medium
Patrician 01-24-2004, 12:49 AM ROFL no. Men are more aggressive and decisive. They have better hand to eye coordination. They are better with directions.
Miss Misery 01-24-2004, 03:26 PM i have never been pulled over
nor have i ever been in an accident.
but i do stupid things sometimes.

Perhaps it's just that guys get pulled over more because girls are better drivers. Perhaps girls get less tickets because they don't get pulled over as often, rather than knowing how to work their way out of tickets.

If men do more stupid things while driving, then does it not stand to reason that they don't drive as well?
***NOTE: I'm not actually saying that girls are better drivers. I'm just bringing in valid points that seem to have been left out. I think that how you drive is in no way gender related***

No. I'm referring to drag racing, taking turns to fast, etc. Basically do ing things that they are aware of, for short periods of time, and being more or less in control... unless something goes wrong.
The bad women drivers I see are just bad all the time. Rather than isolated events of stupidity, it's more like general habits and behavior that is continually happening.
But, hey... what do I know?
Snouter 01-25-2004, 11:50 PM Good points PFDarkside. The vehicle and the way that females drive is an emotional extention of their insecurities and anger for being female after all of society's efforts to make them male.
One of the most dangerous vehicles on the road is an angry soccer mom on a cell phone, wearing sunglasses and a frown no matter what the weather, driving a Tahoe type of thing.
codycr6 01-26-2004, 09:45 AM I agree somewhat with the statement of men being better overall, but having some agressive driving habits. I was this way when I was younger (now 28) and drove sports cars and my Mustang all the time on the street. Now that I race most of the time on the track, I have actually slowed down quite a bit on the street and don't get pulled over often (knock on wood). My girlfriend is 22 and I don't really feel she would be as good at accident avoidance or emergency lane changes as I am after years more experience and familiarity with how vehicles react. There is something else that has not been mentioned: men, on average, drive many more miles per year than women. If insurance were rated per mile driven, I feel that the rate for men would be lower, it just happens that men tend to drive more per year, which by law of averages increases his chance of getting a ticket or having an accident. I think this is especially true in the 16-25 age range, when most teenagers are dating and the male is the one picking the female up for dates and such. Compound this with the fact that he is not yet a very experienced driver, and you have a pretty good recipe for an increase in liability.
Katalina 01-26-2004, 10:12 AM I have been pulled over..
I do drive fast sometimes..
I have also done dumb things when driving, but I do try my best:D

Where did you get the figure that men drive more miles in a year than women? I drive a helluva lot when I am in Cali. And a few dates where a bf has picked me up doesn't really amount to anything in my personal experience.
codycr6 01-26-2004, 09:22 PM So where you live, guys don't usually pick up their date? Does everybody go Dutch, or have the guys allready lost their licenses from poor driving? I can think of very few occasions that I have ever had a date pick me up. I don't know if it is because most people where I live know I race...nope, that couldn't be it, because I drove most of the time well before people knew me from racing. I never said that every man drives more than every woman, but on average. What do you think the ratio of female truck drivers to male truck drivers is nationwide? What about motorcyclists? Race car drivers, or even car enthusiasts? My gf drives quite a bit...I am on call every other weekend right now, so she drives to visit me each weekend that I am on call...that's 150 miles each way. However, a few weeks ago when we went visiting her family and mine, I drove 600 miles from Friday afternoon till Sunday night. She drove 180 miles that same weekend. What do you consider a "helluva lot"?
